The main thing is to go with your preference of either staying at home or living in halls 🙂

With staying at home, you can save some money by not having to pay out for accommodation.
You are still close to family and friends which can be good if you are a little apprehensive about this step in your educational career (also think of the home comforts!)
It might enable you to manage your time more effectively by being more productive, as you will be managing your time for studies around your commuting 🙂
You can still join societies and make the most out of the student experience, so please don't feel you will miss out on that part. You will likely meet new people and make new friends on your course, and I am sure they wouldn't mind if you stayed over for a night if there was a social event on!

Thanks @CCCU Health Rep - really great tips there

I moved into halls in my first year but stayed at home for the rest of my degree, so thought I could jump in here to give you my pros and cons too...

Pros

Money - you can save a lot of money from living at home as you will not be paying monthly rent, or necessarily buying all of your own groceries

Closer to family - particularly important if like me you are close to your family or if you struggle with anxiety, living at home means you are surrounded by people who can support you

Work/life balance - if you live at home then going to uni feels more like a commute to and from work, and means there is greater separation between your uni life and your home and social life, which could be really helpful for maintaining a work-life balance

You can still join in with everything on offer on campus, such as societies, nights out, clubs - if anything being at home may give you extra motivation to try new things and engage with campus and your friends to make up for not living on campus

Cons

Less independent - living at home means you are generally less independent than living on campus or in a shared house. Whilst you can still maintain independence by cooking for yourself, shopping, managing your work and going out to do extracurriculars, the independence isn't at the same level

You will still need to buy a bus pass. However be sure to look at First Bus' website as they may offer a special student ticket designed specifically for your uni's term dates so you won't be paying for months where you're not going to uni

Feels more distant - whilst this could be helpful, there is still a lot to be said for bonding with flatmates and the memories you make whilst in halls. However like I mentioned there is absolutely nothing stopping you visiting your friends' accommodation, socialising and getting involved with campus events

Time management - if you live at home it requires a greater degree of time management as you won't have the convenience of our lecture halls being so close to your accommodation. So you might need to be careful about the lie-ins!

You have to bring all your food and laptop/charger etc to uni with your for the day, so its more to carry!

I really hope that helps, just go with what you feel is best for you but I'm confident that either way you will have a great experience at uni - both options offer plenty of great opportunities

Hi

There are a whole host of benefits to staying at home whilst studying at University.

1) You can save money on bills like accommodation as well as potentially a bit of money on transport as well.
2) In addition you might be able to save money on food as you will be able to share the cost
3) Save on bills as you can share them whilst at home.

Allows you to still see your family regularly as well as keeping up with home friends!

I hope this helps,

Hey there!

Staying at home for university definitely has some advantages. It’s much cheaper since you save on rent and food costs! However, you do have to think about the cost of commuting!

I can also enjoy the comfort of my own space and I have my family close by, which helps reduce stress, especially during exams (and means I get a home cooked meal around exams!) .

I hope this helps,
