joining the RAF

Hii, im 15 rn but i want to the join the RAF, hopefully as a gunner, but i don't think it'll be possible because of my eyesight. my eyesight is -13 dioptres, but i wear contact lenses. i was basically wondering if there's like a slim chance that maybe i could make it as a gunner with my poor eyesight, or if there are any other roles within the RAF that would be acceptable of my eyesight.
Thanks!

I'm an aircraft technician mech and i work with someone whose vision is terrible (and i mean terrible). I'm pretty sure all you need is glasses that fix your eyesight to join as an engineer.

The only way to find out is to apply. There will be other roles for which you are eligible, but every job has certain medical requirements, plus others such educational qualifications, Defence Aptitude Test score etc.

thanks for the reply, smth to do with engineering was my second option. Also may i ask, how long did it take from your initial application to actually going off for basic training?

Personally I was about a 8 months, if you have vision issues it might take longer due to needing to go for other medical tests

I have +5 but my medical test took quite a while to get to, and my initial opticians test said i have +5.5 which failed me after all of it, luckily i managed to get another opinion which passed me at +5 which i then filed an appeal for. I am pretty sure the limit is -6 to +5 so i dont think you will be able to join. I applied as an aircraft mechanic so it may be different but just thought id give a heads up

Please don't say things like "I don't think you will be able to join" as that is only opinion.

Unless it is an absolute show-stopper, the advice given on here, from those of us who have served in the Armed Forces and worked in Recruitment, is "make an application and see how you get on." The only people with access to the most up-to-date information are medical professionals, and that information can change. Please leave it to the doctors.
