missed my med offer

i got straight 9s at GCSE. I struggled in sixth form and had a mental breakdown- for straight Bs. obviously I missed my medicine offer but I still feel so devastated. I’m not one of the people who want to do medicine for the money. all I ever wanted was to be a doctor. it’s truly the only thing I see myself doing. I’ve got a related course and I’m starting next week but all I’m thinking about is medicine. advice ?

Look at grad entry medicine. Also there are transfer schemes. Both are competitive but if you’re dedicated enough and work through it you can get in. I wish you the best.
I know that University of Hertfordshire do a transfer to KCL and Sheffield Hallam to University Of Sheffield

Honestly, for med your easiest option would be to not enrol in the other course and to take a year out retaking your level 3 qualifications.

My friend got the same results as you, BBB. She resat them the next year and got the straight A’s then got into medicine. If you definitely know you want to do medicine, resit the a-levels. That’s gonna take you a year instead of the 3yrs+ that ur gonna waste on another course.

explain to the uni that was offering you a place and provide evidence. they may still offer you a place

There's no point in doing this. They've already made their final decision weeks ago. They're not accepting someone with BBB onto med regardless of ill health.

I wouldn't.

I've worked in admissions for years. Been involved with med admissions and have made decisions on countless near miss offer holders including those with mitigating circumstances.

Our thread starter is 4 grades below the standard med offer. They are absolutely not going to convince someone with a bit of grovelling to admit them onto a fully subscribed med programme 2wks before it starts.

Please do not encourage people to waste their time.

Hello,
Since you have been in admissions for medicine, do you have any interview tips?

I sent the relevant evidence to the med school for 2025 entry. I’m not expecting anything but it’s worth a shot

Hey is there any chance in your opinion of even a slightly lowered offer for next year? I explained my situation (I also had bereavement & a cancer diagnosis in my immediate family in yr13) but I’m not expecting to hear back with anything positive. I’m ok with graduate entry med I just want to know that there’s definitely no chance of undergrad before going to uni for an alternative course. I was bullied in school so wouldn’t like to go back to school to resit but there is a potential to sit them at another school nearby

In my experience, no chance.

Mitigating circumstances are sometimes taken into account for offer holders who have narrowly missed their conditions. If you're applying again in a subsequent cycle, they'll just expect you to have used the time to retake and achieve the required grades.

GEM is a longer, more expensive and more competitive route. But if it is what you've settled on then I'm not here to change your mind.

I've not interviewed for med, so I don't have any insight into the scoring process.

I can give you general advice about the day, but it would probably be the kind of stuff you could research about any generic goood interview prep.

Ah ok- did you work in Notts/med by any chance? That’s where I submitted the extenuating circumstance form for. So are you saying that if I were to resit and reapply they’d likely still offer the standard AAA? Thanks for responding!

I don't disclose where I work, (or have worked), but I can give general advice. I would still submit the form, because it may give them some comfort between your straight B's and how likely you are to improve in your resits. But yes, if you get an offer it's still 99.999% likely to be the standard one, (whether it's AAA, or A*AA etc).

this is so similar to my story!
got straight 8/9s at GCSE, had huge issues mentally, ended up with AABB
i’m looking to resit my grade Bs next year, of course the decision you make is completely down to you, but you may find resitting your a levels is more ideal, especially since you are really stuck on medicine. honestly on results day i thought of SOOO many other crazy stuff i’d rather do than resit my a levels, it sounded like being asked to return to a toxic ex. i genuinely couldn’t stand the thought of it, especially given my mental state throughout sixth form, it sounded like self sabotage. but i’ve had a month to reflect and i realised that i have all that i need in me, i know the content inside out, it’s just exam technique i need to perfect. i also know i can do miles better, which adds fuel to the fire. i believe you can do it, too. don’t let mental health win this battle, if you are so drawn to medicine, keep fighting until you get there, whether that’s sitting exams again, or looking into post grad. if you decide to continue with your alternative course, treat it as a means to an end. enjoy the content, it’s ought to be medically related, engage in medical research, look into healthcare jobs, keep wider reading, explore internships, speak with doctors and other healthcare professionals for inspiration, connect with people online (like me!! ) when you enter your final year, you’ll be able to apply to medicine and fulfil your dream. ultimately, you want to look back in 4/5 years, and be happy with the decision you made. i’d definitely think about it, but trust me, you’ll be fine, and will end up where you want to be. sending best wishes <3

I achieved ABD in my a-levels and am resitting the D, with a predicted of a B and so have applied to foundation years. I have significant mitigating circumstances with evidence from my GP. With your knowledge, do you think I have a chance at foundation year med this year?

Depends on what grades the FY’s are asking for, and whether they accept resits, but in brief, yes, you have a chance.
