Keele Bioveterinary foundation

Hi everyone, has anyone completed the bioveterinary foundation year at keele on the pathway to veterinary medicine. I was wondering how hard you found the year and how many progressed onto the vet med degree. Thanks

Hiya, yeah I did the access year but I did the one at Harper, and I’m now on the vet med course at HKVS.

There are 10 places, they also run another foundation course at Keele, which too has 10 places.

This is with regards to Harper:
The year is quite easy tbh. They have changed some of the modules as of this September, some are the same. Academic writing wise and referencing, the course provides good preparation. The biology module I personally didn’t think it was detailed enough but this is one of the modules that has changed. The teaching staff are friendly and supportive, especially if you’re neurodivergent.

The uni automatically enter you for the HK MMI's, which are sat on a separate day to external applicants. Definitely feel that doing the year gives you a lot more potential of getting a place at HK Vs being an external applicant - you’d really have to mess up at the MMI’s to not get a place considering you’re on the year 0 course. (The only hard part is getting a place on the year 0). But you also have to achieve the required 70% for the year 0 to transfer but this is easily achievable.

To get a place on the access course, we had to write an essay on a given topic. I’d recommend using the RCVS code of conduct if the topic is relevant to that (ours was).

I know a fellow vet nurse who did the course at Keele. Their course was quite different to the one I did. A few people dropped out but the ones who remained all made it on to year 1. The biology and chemistry aspect is pretty much a level content.

If you want any further information, let me know 🙂

The Harper foundation year is animal based, although the biology module has changed from this academic year to life sciences so I believe it’s not just animal biology anymore. The Keele foundation year isn’t as animal-focused and is more science based
