The Student Room Group

One opportunity you would recommend to first years this year!

Hi Everyone,

Been as the start of the University term is approaching, I thought it would be a good idea to recommend some invaluable opportunities for students to take advantage of!

1) Join a society - it's the best thing I have ever done
2) Go for a class rep position on your course - it is a great way to demonstrate communication organisational skills.

What is your unmissable opportunity?

Thanks for another helpful thread Matt

My top tips:

1.

Join a club or society. Its a lovely way to meet people with similar interests and opens up a great network of new people

2.

Go for a night out in town. Doesn't have to be a nightclub, it could be a pub/cocktail bar, concert or escape room (we have an axe throwing centre here in Bath!). A great thing to do with your flatmates to make memories.

3.

Work as a student ambassador. If its your type of thing, its defo worth doing! You get paid well for what is really fun and varied work (campus tours, visiting schools, working on summer schools, online mentoring, working for the admissions team in clearing time!) It also opens up a network of lots of other students from all year groups and courses and so is a brill way to meet new people

Best wishes everybody!

Hi there!

I totally agree with what has been said in this thread so far, these would be my top three things to take advantage of at uni:

1) Try a society in something you've never done before. Whether it's a new sport, or something else, uni is such a valuable opportunity to try new things, as they're all in one place! I personally tried a new sport at uni in my third year and I've loved it so much, I wish I'd given it a go earlier on!

2) Being around teaching staff who can offer so much information about your field. Don't be afraid of making the most of the academic support available to you, or just asking questions about careers in their area, in my experience teaching staff are generally happy to talk to someone interested in their subject!

3) Being in a city you've never experienced before. Uni flies by, so make the most of being in a new place, explore, find your own favourite spots and enjoy it!

Best of luck to all those starting at uni this year!

Hi Matt,

Thank you for staring this thread!

I would recommend students to get involved and apply for the on-campus jobs, especially the Student Ambassador Roles! I was a student ambassador during my first year and it was one of the best ways to earn some extra pocket money and develop skills, all while meeting new people and having fun!

I would also recommend to attend the on-campus events, especially the ones during freshers week! They are always so fun and help students make many new friends.

All the best to everyone starting university! 🙂

Thank you,
