Frequently asked freshers' questions (Kingston University)

Hi all,

Students usually have lots of questions before starting university; to make it easier to find answers I have put all the most common questions in one place. Feel free to ask/add more questions below :h:

What is welcome week?

Welcome Week is just the start of getting you settled into Kingston University. When you join us there will be activities to help you settle into life as a Kingston student, meet new friends and get ready for your studies. https://www.kingston.ac.uk/welcome/

How do I find out about freshers’ and welcome week events?

During welcome week there are both mandatory inductions and optional events. To find your induction schedule go onto your time table on the KU app.
You can sign up for other events here https://www.kingston.ac.uk/welcome/welcome-week/ and here https://www.kingstonfreshers.com

How do I find my welcome week/ induction timetable?

If you download the KingstonUni app, once you log in on the home page you should see a Welcome Week banner, click on that and then click on 'Find your induction schedule' and you just search for your course and you schedule should be there. I believe you can also find this if you log into My Kingston on a browser. Or follow this link and login https://kingston.ombiel.co.uk/

How can I book my In-person Check-In?

Before you receive an email and can book an in-person check-in slot, the Admissions Team will need to first verify the identification documents you submitted for online enrolment. Admissions are currently hard at work verifying these documents. If there are any issues with your documents or enrolment details, you will be notified.

Should I buy the freshers wristband?

I would recommend taking a look at the events and decide whether it would be cheaper for you to get a wristband or pay individually. Also bare in mind that you may change your mind on what events you want to attend once you get there. The wristband does give you the option at attend as many as you like. https://www.kingstonfreshers.com

Where do I collect my ID badge?

Once you have fully enrolled you will be invited to book a slot to have your ID card printed at one of our Libraries. There is a library at each campus so make your way there to collect your ID.

When/where do I get my timetable?

Once your enrolment has be verified by our team you will be able to find your timetable on the Kingston University mobile app.

Where is best to do the food shop?

The cheapest are Aldi and Lidl which are located in the centre of Kingston just a short walk from Middle Mill and a short bus journey from the other halls of residence. You can use the KU buses for free.

Other shops in the area include Sainsburys, Tesco, Asda, Co-op, M&S and Waitrose. Kingston Food Centre is a great shop that stocks international products for great prices. It is just behind the train station.

Best places to eat?

My personal favourite is Poor Boys. However, if you want something cheap Weatherspoon’s is the place to go. There are also lots of chains and fast-food restaurants in the centre of Kingston. Along the Thames there are lots of nice restaurants too.

Best places to go for a drink?

Again, Weatherspoon’s is really cheap. The Mill is a pub that is popular with students as it offers discounts and student nights. There are lots of pubs all over Kingston that are worth exploring.

How do I register with a GP?

You should register with a general practitioner (GP) as soon as you can. If you will be living in Kingston, you may want to register at the Fairhill Medical Practice (the Health Centre) on the University's Penrhyn Road campus. Alternatively, visit the NHS Choices website for a list of other local GPs.

Who are ResLife?

If you are living in halls, you will probably come into contact with the ResLIfe team. They put on a range of events for those living in halls to help you meet people, making halls feel like a community where you are happy and safe. You can also go to them with any difficulties or concerns you may have whilst living in halls. To find out more follow @reslifeku on Instagram.

Where can I find the KU bus schedule?

On the Kingston University App. Alternatively through the web browser https://kingston.ombiel.co.uk/ or through My Kingston.

Where can I find more information on societies/sports clubs?

You can find the list of societies and sports clubs on the student union website Home (kingstonstudents.net)

Sometimes students create societies that are not part of the student union. If you can’t find a society you are looking for you can always create your own official society through the student union.

Freshers fair is the best event to attend if you want to find out more, as all the societies will be there to talk to and even sign up if you are interested.

What does the student Union do and what are they?

The Union of Kingston Students is run by students for students. Your chosen representatives work hard to campaign your views and give you guidance. They also organise events and activities throughout the year. There's always something to get involved in at Kingston University. Every year the Union of Kingston Students' societies run hundreds of events including; charity/fundraisers, dinners and dances, themed nights, guest-speaker events and trips abroad. https://www.kingstonstudents.net/

What support services are there?

There is lots of support available here at Kingston from well being to academic support and disability to money advice, we've got you covered. Explore our support services via this link: https://www.kingston.ac.uk/undergraduate/student-support/

What is KU Extra?

This is a platform you can access via the app or through My Kingston that shows you all the events that are going on throughout the year.

I hope you are looking forward to starting at Kingston and remember to add more questions below
