General Engineering and Mechanical Engineering

I am looking to apply for General Engineering at Oxford as that is all they offer, but I plan to apply for Mechanical Engineering at my other choices, if I tailor my personal statement towards mechanical am i likely to be accepted by Oxford, and vice-versa?
Hey @kingdb6

In your personal statement, it's important to balance your passion for engineering as a whole with a focus on mechanical engineering. For Oxford, where you’re applying for General Engineering, emphasize your enthusiasm for the broad range of engineering disciplines and your eagerness to explore various fields before specializing. Highlight experiences that showcase your curiosity and problem-solving skills across different aspects of engineering, while subtly indicating your interest in mechanical engineering. For other universities, where you're applying specifically for Mechanical Engineering, focus on your passion for this field, but also tie it to broader engineering concepts to demonstrate versatility. This approach will cater to Oxford’s broader curriculum and the more specialized nature of mechanical engineering courses at other institutions.

Oxford isn’t general engineering, it’s engineering science, this may seem like a semantic but the Oxford course you specialize in two engineering disciplines which could include mechanical (and this IMechE accredited).

I’ve known plenty of people go into mechanical engineering roles via the Oxford degree, so yes you’ll be fine.

They are not naive to the fact students have to apply to 5 universities (both Oxford & all other UK institutions). Additionally the personal statement is typically not as influential in engineering applications as other subjects.
