Long Residency

I arrived in the UK on 29 December 2013 on a visitor visa at the age of 10. I enrolled in primary school on 13 February 2014, and have lived in the UK continuously since then. After my visitor visa, I transitioned to a more permanent immigration status under the Family/Private Life route. I’m applying for Student Finance under the long residency rule (over 18 and lived in the UK for at least half my life).

My concern is whether the time spent on a visitor visa counts towards the "half your life" requirement. According to Home Office Private Life caseworker guidance, there is flexibility for children and young adults who transitioned from a visitor visa to a more permanent status, especially for those who’ve lived in the UK continuously. I’m seeking clarity on whether this applies to my eligibility for student finance.

Hi Caspertheghost1,

As long as you were resident in the UK we can count this.

Thanks,
Calum

What does that mean please? I came on a visitor visa as a child but just stayed and started school a month later so I’m eligible?! So it doesn’t matter what visa I had when I first entered?
Hi Caspertheghost1,

Based on the guidance I have it does not matter if you had a visitor visa. As long as you have been resident in the UK for half your life or 20 years you should be eligible under long residency.

Thanks,
Calum

Thanks. Also when I send in evidence a day apart could they be reviewed at the same time? So like I send in evidence today and one tomorrow.
Hi Caspertheghost1,

The evidence should be picked up at the same time, yes. It is currently taking around 19 working days to review.

Thanks,
Calum

Thank you Calum. One more question. My email said I could upload all evidence for my long residency online Including visa stamps, HO letters etc is that true? Or do I have to post those ones?
Hi Caspertheghost1,

Yes, we can accept this evidence via digital upload.

Thanks,
Calum

Hi there,

Applications take 6-8 weeks to process once we have everything from you. Once your application is approved you will see this online and be sent paperwork in post to confirm this. Your first payment won't be released till you start the course and university confirm your registration to us.

Thanks,
Claire

What!!! 6-8 Weeks? The last date of enrolment is the 28th October 2024 for my course and the first accommodation bill is on 02nd October :/

After that 6-8 weeks how long is it for it to hit your bank?

What do I tell my uni and accommodation?

Your first payment won't be released till you start the course and university confirm your registration to us. Payment normally takes 3-5 working days to reach yuor bank account once this is done.

I would suggest speaking to your university/accommodation and letting them know when you sent the evidence and the timescales we have advised.

Thanks,
Claire

Hello, they aren’t accepting my visa why? I showed photocopy of a visa stamp that i entered for the 29th December and somehow it doesn’t cover 2nd of January literally 3 days after? How’s this?

If I send in a UKVI PDF of my immigration history (given to me by my university to give to SFE). Can that cover certain dates in my long residency?

So for example: on the file, my Leave to Enter Dates from 19/11/2013 to 19/05/2014.

Will that cover the SFE Question of - Evidence needed to show your long residence
You need to send us evidence that shows you’ve lived in the UK from
02/01/2014 to 13/02/2014”

and this also - “If you entered the UK after 02/01/2014, you will not be eligible for
funding.”

Also will this document also cover

It was an NHS health summary which states when I entered England 29th December

Okay, yes - this sounds fine.

Just to say, any evidence you upload needs to be reviewed by the assessment team.

Rest assured, if the team need any further details they'll let you know as soon as they can. Please check your account and e-mails for any updates.

Thanks, Graeme
Are these compliant/Acceptable with Long Residency Evidence:

NHS Child Health Summary - with section detailing date of arrival to England.

UKVI - Immigration History Check Form

Letter from primary school stating when I arrived in England and Where I lived
Hi Caspertheghost1,

We can accept letters from your school and the NHS, I cannot confirm if the UKVI document will be accepted, your evidence will need to be reviewed by an assessor.

Thanks,
Calum
