VetMed as Second Degree SFE funding

So I know I can still get a maintenance loan for a second degree (veterinary medicine) does this apply to all 5 of the years?

I've also been seeing a lot about being able to get a tuition loan for the final 2 years as long as you only completed 3 year degree prior to this, is this still the case?

Thanks

Hi Anonymous9795,

We calculate your future entitlement as follows:

Course length + 1 year - previous study = entitlement.

Therefore, if you were to begin a new 5 year course for example and have 3 years of previous study, the calculation would be 5+1-3= 3 years. This means that you will be fully funded for year 3,4 and 5 of the 5 year course, however for the first and second years, you will need to self-fund your tuition fees as you will only receive the Maintenance Loan and supplementary grants if applicable.

Thanks, Clare

Oh really! so I would receive the same funding as a typical school leaver except I would be responsible for tuition during years 1 and 2?

I thought I would need to save 3 years tuition, 2 years would be even more manageable

Hi Anonymous9795,

That's correct. If you don't hold an equal level qualification, then the previous study calculation would apply.

Thanks, Clare

I'm sorry could please clarify "If you don't hold an equal level qualification". both would be undergraduate degrees one a BSc and one BVSc does that mean this wouldn't apply? I would be applying to it as my second degree as stated

Hi there,

An undergraduate degree is normally an equal level qualification, but the course you're thinking of doing sounds like it may be an exception.

Can you please tell us the full name of this course and the university? Thanks, Graeme

Hi there,

So to confirm you already hold an undergraduate degree and will your new course lead to you being a fully qualified veterinary surgeon?

Thanks, Drew

Yes it would be a full time degree (5 years) leading to me being qualified in veterinary medicine and surgery. I would be entering with a BSc.

Hi there,

This course is classed as an exception course for students who are applying for a 2nd degree. You would be eligible to apply for the Maintenance Loan and Supplementary Grants. You are not eligible for the Tuition Fee Loan for the course.

Thanks, Drew
