UCL rankings?

Before starting at UCL in the Department of Political Science, I'd like to know if UCL ranks their cohorts.

ie 1st out of say 150 students and such.

I don't want to reach out to a professor/advisor because I don't want to come off too strong lol.
I'm not in that department but I'm not aware of this being standard practice at UCL or in the UK in general outside of medicine/dentistry (which rank students and use deciles as they are non-honours degrees), and a couple of niche exceptions (SOAS used to rank their Japanese students apparently but have stopped now; Cambridge has class lists but these are now opt-in I believe).

I've never known a UK university to do this. :nope:

Ahhh thanks so much! Also explains why I saw another medicine thread discussing class ranks at UCL.

So what are the general means of rewarding exceptional students - is it just the grade you receive (ie 1st/high 2.1) or are there other means that UCL uses to reward top scoring students? (apart from scholarships as I was told at UCL these are only given before beginning first year)

Thanks again!

Scholarships can be given for a number of reasons but their purpose is typically to support the learner as they learn not as a prize at the end.

Most unis do various special awards at the end of the year, academic excellence being among those things celebrated. However, the main reward is simply a first class degree and therefore many many doors open for what you want to do next.

Hi! As far as I am aware *most* UCL courses do not rank their students, I have friends studying PolSci/PPE and they haven't experienced anything like this. I study law and we have prizes/awards at the end of the year for the top marks in each module, and scholarship opportunities which are merit-based/means-tested.

There may be small prizes available for e.g. best overall mark in the year, best essay in the year, etc. These are usually between 50 and a couple of hundred pounds though. Scholarships are rare in general in the UK (full or partial), and generally at undergraduate level bursaries and scholarships are need based and not merit based.

You seem to be focusing more on the final outcome of getting a high grade and accolades associated with that rather than the process involved in getting a good grade and the inherent rewards in developing your intellectual capabilities and knowledge. You may want to focus more on the journey and less on the destination.
