Need help choosing between oxbridge psychology courses?

Hi!
I’m currently in year 11 completing my GCSE’s next year, and I’m hoping to do Psychology at university! The A-levels I’m choosing are Psychology, English Lit, and Biology (maybe changing English Lit to maths- not sure yet!). And Im not looking for comments saying ‘you shouldn’t be worrying about this at the moment’ because I like having a plan for the future

I’m struggling to choose between Oxford’s Experimental Psychology course and Cambridge’s Psychological and behavioural sciences course.

For me, Oxford would be my dream university, but I prefer the style of course that Cambridge has, with how you can choose two other papers to look at. Whereas at Oxford, you get to choose your dissertation at the end (?).

I think that for the campus and the city, as well as the tutoring I would prefer to apply for Oxford, but that Cambridge’s course feels better to do, and I’m stuck!

Any replies would be gratefully appreciated

hi from an hopeful pbs applicant for 2025!
i totally understand wanting a plan, but don't worry too much yet. A-levels hit you like a truck, and if you want to apply to cambridge the requirement is A*A*A - no matter how well you did in your GCSEs that does not mean you will get that, and thats okay. I got 11 9s at GCSE and struggled to meet that requirement, so don't get your heart set on something too early.
Aside from that, both courses are fundamentally similar, as you have to remember that in order to be BPS accredited all psychology courses must teach similar content. The oxford course is seemingly more biological whereas cambridge is more of the applied social aspect, but in actuality you could go to either and do largely the same course by just picking the optional modules you find intresting.
I have chosen cambridge despite the higher requirement because i love the tripos element to the course, where you can take modules from other subjects, as well as my favourite area of psychology being applied social and developmental, which cambridge specialises. As you haven't begun psych a-level yet, i wouldn't worry too much about what your favourite areas are yet as you may surpise yourself.
About oxford being your dream uni, I don't think you can be too sure about that. What makes your uni experience is your college, so you could have a dream college at oxford, but it can't be your dream uni because you would have very different experience at trinity vs fitzwilliam (look up photos)
Your a-level choices are good, do not drop bio as you NEED a science/maths that isn't psychology. It's your choice about picking up maths - not even cambridge expects both maths and biology so don't worry too much
PM me with any other questions, I submit my application to emmanuel college cambridge for pbs in two weeks so i'm happy to answer any questions as i've done all my research/ gone to open days etc. my a-levels are psychology, history and biology. My predicted grades come out this week and i'm hoping for 3 A*s

A-Level Maths is much easier to get an A* grade in than English Literature by far. Because there are 4 YouTube channels which go through the entire course for Maths and Further Maths:

TLMaths
BicenMaths
ExamSolutions
HindsMaths

So you should choose A-Levels in Maths, Biology and Psychology. 🙂

Thank you!! Yeah, I’m gonna discuss it a lot with teachers and try and see what works because I’m so much better at my English than maths annoyingly! It’s just whichever I would find easiest to get an A* in. I have read that a third or so students did take maths and biology, so I’m sure it worked. Thank you so much for your response 🙂
