Surrey vs royal Holloway vs Lancaster

Hey, I am applying for unis through ucas since I can only apply to 5 unis. I decide to apply to 3 Russell’s groups: the University of Manchester, Cardiff, and Glasgow. But I can't make up my mind between Lancaster, Royal Holloway, and Surrey. Which of the options above is the better pick? Keeping in mind both the environment and the rating.

Hi 😁

A lot of it will depend on your course and if you like the modules offered. Have a look at the course page of each university, especially the course structure, and use that information to inform your decision. Could you see yourself enjoying the modules you'd be studying?

Regarding location, Guildford is a 30-40 min train journey from central London. The main campus is a 10-min walk from the train station and town centre, so you'll be studying very centrally. Guildford has pubs, nightclubs, parks, shopping centres, and everything else you'll need as a student. A big bonus for me was that the Surrey campus library is open 24/7 during term time.

Let me know if you have any other questions about Surrey 😊

Hi @Inara_
Lancaster is a campus based university in the Northwest of England, which is located 3 miles (or a 15 minute bus ride) out of the city. The city is very historic and has a good range of shops, cafes and bars. Lancaster is well connected to the nearby major cities of Manchester and Liverpool which are an hour away, and London being 2.30hrs on the train. We're also located very close to the Lake district which is very easy to get to, if your interested in being outdoors.

As the other ambassadors have said, it might be worth considering the difference in the course at each university, as the modules will likely be different dependent on what specialists your department has. There is a list of the typical modules you can expect to study at Lancaster on each courses page.
It could be worth visiting each university to have a look round and meet your department. Lancaster's next open day is the 12th October, and more information on it can be found here Undergraduate Open Days - Lancaster University.
Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Hello!

Thank you for your interest in applying to Royal Holloway. We would recommend taking a look at our course finder to look at details for the subject you're interested in studying, such as modules, entry requirements etc.

In terms of location and environment, Royal Holloway has the best of worlds - our Egham campus has been considered to be one of the most beautiful campuses with our green spaces and stunning architecture, but we're also just 40 minutes from London by train where you can explore what the city has to offer.

Why not book onto one of our upcoming Open Days to experience Royal Holloway for yourself!

We hope this helps you with your decisions.

Best wishes,
Royal Holloway, University of London

It depends heavily on course, but from what I've heard the other two are definitely better than us. Lancaster is a very small campus, but that might have its own advantages. That leaves the choice between Guildford vs Egham, which is pretty trivial.
I've visited all three of those campuses in the past few months (my daughter’s looking for a BA, I'm looking for a PhD), and we were impressed by all three. I'm gonna argue with @FilthyCommunist about Lancaster being a 'very small' campus, though I'm studying at Bath Spa at the moment, so Lancaster seems like Metropolis! Lancaster is an out-of-town campus, but it had the best on-campus selection of shops of anywhere I've seen (aside from places like Oxford/Cambridge). I also got a sense that it took all faculties equally seriously, from humanities to social sciences to STEM, which isn't always the case elsewhere. Surrey's 24/7 library is a selling point, but all three of those unis have good-size libraries; however, Surrey does now has a small supermarket (larger than a convenience store, anyway) right there in the library building. Surrey's proximity to Guildford town centre makes it best for shopping, I'd say. As someone else said, Surrey and Royal Holloway both have London nearby by train, but they don’t have the Lake District in striking distance. Holloway is a lovely, leafy campus and a postcard destination, but I also got the sense from several departments that the staff are truly energised about their subjects. On-campus shopping seemed feeble, though. Personally, I'd leap for Lancaster, but I'm older so I don't need the London nightlife!
