Am I cooked?

I'm heading into my third year and from the looks of it I'm looking to achieve a third class honours. I'm on a Games Design course and my grades for my second year modules (which amounted to 30% of my award) were 40, 40, 40, 78, 53, 37. I had a look online and it averaged to 48% if I'm correct. My question is that now that I am heading into my final year which weighs to 70% of my award how much would I need to average in my modules for a 2:1 or a first class?

Hey , you aren’t cooked haha. 40 is a pass. For a 2:1 you need 60% and for a 1st you need 70% I believe. Try and aim to improve your grades to 50 and above and you’ll want your third class honours no problem, your only two percent off and that is a very small gain going into your final year, ask for help as much as you can it’ll be small tweaks that you need to make
A 2.2 is perfectly possible to achieve - as written in the above post. A 2.1 is possible with some hard work but a 1st looks out of reach for you.

To figure out your second year grade overall, work out 30% of the mark awarded for a particular module (ie 0.3 x mark) then add up the 6 marks and divide by 6 to get the average across the 6 modules you took in year 2. That will give you a figure of 14.4%. That means that out of a possible 30% you could have been awarded (if you had achieved 100% in each module) you have actually banked 14.4%.

You can then see what marks you need in your 3rd year to get a 2.2. 2.1, 1st.

•

If you were to get an average mark of 40% across your 3rd year modules then your mark for year 3 would be 40% x 0.7 = 28%. Thus you would come out with 14.4 + 28 = 42.4 (a third)

•

Ditto for average of 50% - 14.4 + 35 = 49.4 (third)

•

Ditto for average of 60% - 14.4 + 42 = 56.4 (2.2)

•

Ditto for average of 70% - 14.4 + 49 = 63.4 (2.1)

•

Ditto for average of 80% - 14.4 + 56 = 70.4 (1st)

In summary:

•

You need to get 51% average across all year 3 modules to scrape a 2.2 - perfectly possible.

•

You would need to get an average of 65% across all year 3 modules to scrape a 2.1 - tough.

•

You would need to achieve an average of 80% across all year 3 modules to scrape a first - tall order.

Realistically, based on your year 2 performance, expect to get a solid 2.2. No shame in that.
