Hi,
Congratulations on heading to uni! You definitely don't have to attend all freshers events, these are entirely optional. There may be some introductory lectures/talks that may be important to useful - I would recommend attending these. Additionally, I wouldn't miss out on freshers fair, this is a great place to learn what is going on at your university.
Hope this helps! Faye 🙂

Thanks you they won’t mark you down as absent if you don’t attend certain ones

In my experience they have not taken attendance during these introduction talks as they are optional, however I cannot speak for all universities.

Hi there,

I would agree that you don't usually have to attend all of the events and in my experience, you won't be marked as absent if you don't attend, however each university is different so I can't say this for definite!

I would say that it's good to go to the freshers fair and there is usually some good events on this week which you might like. The societies fair is good if you are thinking of joining a society or sometime there is a sports fair with all of the different sports societies on offer so these can be good if you are thinking about joining any societies at all. There is also usually a freebie fair which can be fun to go to with your flatmates as a bit of a fun activity to break the ice and you also get lots of free things/discounts here too.

If your course is putting on any welcome week events, these can be good to go to as well. You might not feel that all of them will be useful to you, but on my course in first year, they put on some get to know each other events which I went to and they turned out to be really good as I met some of my closest friends here and I felt a lot less nervous to go to my classes after this as I already knew some of the people here which made me feel better about this. However it's up to you what you think would be beneficial to you.

If there are any that are compulsory they will say this on the schedule that you have been given so have a look and see if any have been labelled as compulsory and if so, you may need to attend these ones.

I hope some of this helps and enjoy freshers week! 🙂

Hi there!

Congratulations on starting university! I can't clarify about Hull University specifically, but for Fresher's events at Portsmouth, most are optional, and just provide an opportunity for you to learn a bit more about the university, societies and the campus. However, if you do have course induction events that are mandatory, usually these will be highlighted, or stated on the timetable/schedule.

However, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't go to anything - I found various Fresher's events really useful in my first year. Induction lectures are a great way to learn more about your course, and often highlight where you can access different support, so can be really useful to attend! Other course events can be a great way to meet people, and it's great to see some familiar faces once you start attending lectures and seminars!

Finally, Fresher's fair is a great place to find out about different societies, and meeting some of the people from them in person can really help you decide if a society is for you!

I hope this helps, and best of luck starting your degree!
