Lecture Attendance

Hello, I am going to be attending durham university in the next month, and I am staying at home due to personal reasons. It is around a 50-60 minute drive depending on traffic. When viewing my timetable, I am usually in, for consistent lectures on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I was just wondering whether attendance is compulsory for these lectures, and secondly, whether I can view the lectures themselves electronically, perhaps through a subsequent recording. PS, I am doing (BA) Geography- I have mostly lectures, and a few practicals and workshops every few weeks... Cheers.

You are going to uni; why would you not go to lectures? How do you ask questions and gain an understanding by watching a lecture on catch-up? Attendance is looked at...

Lectures are not compulsory and are recorded.

Seminars, tutorials, workshops, practicals etc are compulsory and are not recorded. Attendance for these is monitored and there can be consequences if you routinely miss them.

However, please, please, please do not miss lectures. It is a terrible habit. Everyone says that they'll watch the recording later, but few people ever do. You then fall behind and that discourages you from going to later lectures. Students who miss lectures invariably get lower marks than they otherwise would have.

Thank you for the information. Now, regarding your comments referring to skipping lectures and ‘not catching up’. I can assure you I will, and will keep up on work. I am not saying my absence will be prevalent for all lectures; if a certain module is difficult and complex I will most likely attend. The reasoning I know I will stay on top of workload, is due to my past college experiences. I completed and comprehended most my A-Level content from my home environment; I just seem to be much more focused here, despite the common stereotype of working from home being procrastination and distraction. I respect your comments, and if I feel myself falling into bad habits, I can assure you I will be subject to change. It’s important to recognise that the way in which everyone works is different, and if for me, that is from home, I will most likely do that. However, like I said I will definitely be attending some lectures, and also, I understand that college is much different to university, and I am prepared to manipulate my working habits if I feel it is required.

For one, I am going to university for my education, and nothing else. Secondly, I feel the ideology of viewing lectures electronically, will be more beneficial for me, than attending them in person i.e., I can pause/skip/speed up, bypassing and comprehending certain information respectively. Thirdly, regarding your comment of 'asking questions', is there a possibility I can contact lecturers post-lecture/google/ask fellow classmates? Also, it is likely, that if i find a certain module/section challenging, I will attend the lectures for that component. Lastly, from viewing the module handbooks, it is clear that lecture attendance is not registered, so that should not be an issue...
