About D&T, Geography & History

I have chosen Geography as one of my IGCSE options. However, I’m more interested in History and D&T, so I’m thinking to switch. Which subject to switch is more favorable to me? I’m interested in History, but I’m not the type who could memorize a lot & writing in quick speed. For D&T, I’m also interested, so I could have one subject among the IGCSE subjects that I don’t need to “study & “memorizing a lot. And I find D&T is a fun subject. However, I’m also struggling as D&T seems to me that it’s subjective that in terms of the chance of getting high grade. At the end of the day, getting a higher grade is the most importance, so if this is the top priority, seems Geography is a safer choice, could anyone give me some advice?
To be honest with GCSEs just pick the subjects which you enjoy the most 🙂 because if you pick a subject you dont like its so much harder to motivate yourself to study for it or spend a lot of time on it- you dont want your homework to feel insurmountable because you’ve picked a subject you hate. I do get what you mean about D&T tho as it is subjective, I did Art which i enjoy as a hobby (like drawing and stuff) but its very different as a GCSE compared to other subjects and also there’s the coursework element which can be time consuming or enjoyable depending on how you’re feeling lol. For reference I did art, history, politics, further maths and Spanish alongside compulsories and I would say that I enjoyed history a great deal and art was a fun contrast but I still agree with your point about grades as I ended up getting a 6 in art when the rest of my grades were 999999888A. Id be happy to help further if you need 🙂

Exactly! It’s really a tough choice & I have to make up my mind asap. Great to hear that you enjoy history. Do you agree that, for studying history, one needs to have very strong “memorising” & “writing in high speed”, in addition to analytical skills, for getting good grade?

Yeah definitely, History is one where you need to know so much detail for all the different tiny bits of the course but even then it might not even come up 😭 also I found all the time that I was running out of time in History. Despite that I dont regret choosing it at all, it was very enjoyable (although this is based on the topics we did which vary obviously).

If getting a high grade is all that matters to you, pick which ones you think are your strengths!
Passion for a subject goes SUCH a long way in ensuring that you preform you best. If you love history as a subject, then you'll find it easier to memorise topics more than you ever woukd with geography! It's true geography has less writing than history (esp in GCSEs... cant say the same for Alevels), but there's still quite abit to memorise!
As cheesy as it sounds, follow your heart and do the subject you think you'd enjoy more!

Having a fun subject is a great idea, I took art for that exact reason. Unfortunately, that was down to subjectivity aswell... (thankfully got a 7 there). That's just a case of looking what the examiners really want, and basing your work around that while also keeping it personal enough to remain fun!
