The Student Room Group

is it worth transferring ?

ive just finished a foundation year at uni of brighton for robotics and mechatronics engineering (where i averaged around 64 %) and ive realised that i absolutely hate it here. it's far away from home, im struggling tremendously to make friends, and it's so expensive. Yes these were all factors I should have considered but was stupid and was acting on impulse when i applied. Im now considering taking a gap year to resit my a levels (which I got a CCE in) and applying to uni of sheffield for the same course. my mom doesnt think it would be worth it to drop out and reapply but I feel like it might be helpful for me. How badly would it mess up my student finance and is someone who was in the situation able to help me ? Im also having concerns about starting first year at 21 and being older than everyone else so any advice with that ? thank you

In terms of student finance, the calculation is:

Length of new course + 1 gift year - previous study.

So if a new course is 3 years and you have already studied for 1 year, the calculation would be:

3 + 1 - 1 = 3 years

Being older when you start uni won't be an issue - there will always be some gap-year students and mature students on courses. What you really need to consider is if you can really improve your A level grades enough to get on the course you want to.

Hi I had the same experience as you when I completed my Foundation year at Nottingham in the last academic year and I've applied transfer across to the University of Sheffield for September 2025. They let me into Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering and Electrical and Electronic Engineering with 2:1 in the Foundation Year from Nottingham and I'm 30. I'm going to be 31 when I restart university at Sheffield in September.
