language degrees?

hi! i’m currently interested in studying a language (italian or french maybe) at uni alongside a subject like history or politics. Anyone doing this please let me know if you took language at a level as my school doesn’t give the option to do so. I would take french as a private candidate but i’m worried it may be too hard.

There are options to learn a language from scratch at uni (rather than take it at A level). You will need to search through the course details and entry requirements on uni websites. For example, if you click on the 'Languages' tab on the following link, you will see there are lots of options:

Hey @study88!🌟

I’m thrilled to hear you’re interested in studying a language and combining it with another subject like politics or history—that’s such an exciting combination! Let me tell you about the BA International Relations and Modern Languages program at the University of Essex. This degree sounds like it could be exactly what you’re looking for!

This course is a perfect blend of politics and languages, and it offers you the chance to study up to two languages—including French and Italian! You’ll dive deep into the world of international relations, studying topics like diplomacy, global conflicts, and international organisations, while mastering new languages and developing the cultural understanding that’s so crucial in today’s global world. 🌍💬

I can totally relate to your interest because I personally studied in a similar format! I did BA Business Management and Modern Languages here at Essex, and I chose French and Italian as my two languages. It was such a rewarding experience—I got to immerse myself in both the business world and different cultures, not to mention my year abroad in Italy. Learning two languages opened so many doors for me, and I know it will for you too!

What’s great about the BA International Relations and Modern Languages program is how flexible it is. You can choose to focus more on international politics or lean into the languages side, depending on your interests. You’ll also have the option to spend a year abroad, where you can fully immerse yourself in the languages you’re learning and experience new cultures firsthand. It’s such a valuable opportunity, and I highly recommend it! 🌎✈️

In terms of employment opportunities, this degree is fantastic for preparing you for a range of careers. Whether you’re interested in working for international organisations, diplomacy, NGOs, or even roles in language-based industries like translation, interpretation, or media, the skills you develop—like communication, cultural awareness, and analytical thinking—are highly sought after by employers. 🚀💼

You’ll be studying in both the Department of Language and Linguistics, which is one of the top language schools in the UK, and the Department of Government, which is known for its research and teaching excellence in politics and international relations. The faculty are incredibly supportive and passionate about helping you achieve your goals. You’ll also have access to fantastic resources like language labs, and our professors bring their cutting-edge research into the classroom, making your learning experience truly dynamic and engaging.

And of course, the University of Essex itself is an amazing place to be! Our campus is vibrant and full of life, with a strong sense of community and students from all around the world. There are so many societies and activities to get involved in—whether you want to join a language club, debate society, or just enjoy the beautiful surroundings, you’ll feel right at home. 🌳🎓

If you’re looking for a degree that combines your passion for languages with a deep understanding of global politics, Essex could be the perfect place for you! I know from personal experience that studying at Essex is not only enriching but also incredibly fun and life-changing. 😊

Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions or just want to chat more about the course, languages, or university life—I’d love to help!

Best wishes,
