Distance Learning Student - Why No Maintenance Loan?

The loan is supposed to be for living costs, e.g. "rent, food, travel, entertainment and any course materials you might need".
Distance learning students don't get a maintenance loan so do they think that the student so how avoid all these costs? Really, no accommodation/utilities to pay, they are to stay at home with no entertainment, and they are not allowed any food for the whole year?
Working remotely reduces your costs not eliminates them totally!
I am totally baffled with this one?

Hi there,

These are regulations in place for how funding is assessed. Just to check, is it through the Open University and are you studying distance learning due to a disability that prevents you from attending a physical university? Thanks, Jason

No my daughter is not disabled and it's not an OU course.

Hi Dazie, Therefore the only funding available is the Part Time Tuition Fee. Thanks, Angela

It's not part time.

So do SFE think that "distance learning" students have no accommodation/utilities to pay, they are never allowed any sort of "entertainment", and they don't eat any food for the whole year? If not then clearly a maintenance loan is needed.
Hi Dazie,

The regulations of whether we can award a maintenance loan for distance learning courses are set by the Department for Education, if you have concerns about these regulations I would advise speaking to your local MP.

Thanks,
Calum
