fraser’s gcse blog (road to all 9’s)

im in year 11 and i have mocks in 2 weeks, the school has not given us enough time to revise effectively so im deciding to only revise geography, spanish and english. these are the subjects that i flopped on my last mock (grade 5, grade 4, grade 4) so im going to try and get 7+ on all of these. combined science is an easy subject so i think i will still do good with minimal revision.

for english i will go through each text using the annotations on genius.com and trying to think of alternative interpretations. I will then download character profiles from PMT and study them using mindmaps.

for spanish i will make sure the present, preterite, future, conditional and imperfect are fully learnt. I roughly know these tenses so it should be easy. I will then try and learn some more vocabulary using the specification.

for geography i will make questions on everything i need to know for the topics and go through these everyday. i will make sure to learn the case study information using mind maps.

to ensure this information dont slip from my mind i will use spaced repitition to remember them for the next mock/gcse (go over after 2 days, then 4, 7,14,21…)
Best of lcuk with your revision and with year 11! If youd like any tips/have any questions I got 9 on GCSE English and 8 on Spanish so would be happy to give advice if ever you need it 🙂 Also if you dont already use it, StudySmarter is great for spaced repetition (even if you just put a topic on a flashcard rather than using it traditionally)

How do i get a 9 in English?

For language, learn how to answer each question so that you hit all the criteria on the mark scheme no matter what the question is. Also learn how to explode quotations really well and do in depth analysis. You should learn how to plan different types of creative writing. Lemme know if you need any help on any of these things!
For literature, learn quotations with full analysis from early on in the course. Do frequent practice essays, get them marked by your teacher and internalise the feedback. Make mindmaps on characters, themes and context- research this beyond class to get more interesting interpretations from YouTube videos and pmt notes mostly. Use the paragraph structure point, evidence, analysis, context/theme, reader (plus structure where relevant). Make sure to always discuss form and structure as well as themes and context.
Hope that helps and happy to answer any questions or anything 🙂
