Hi, my sister is starting to look at universities, applying for 2026 entry. Does anyone know of any broad-spectrum engineering courses that allow you to specialise at later stages of the course e.g. chemical, mechanical etc.? Thanks!

Course: Chemical Engineering

Universities: University of Birmingham, University of Manchester, University of Leeds, Aston University, University of Loughborough

A-Levels (Predicted)
A*AB
Maths, Chemistry and Business

AS Grades
AAB
Maths, Chemistry and Business
(My college made us sit exams papers that were externally done by the exam board, if you were wondering how I was able to be predicted an A* in maths)

Sounds like you're looking for a general engineering course. Oxbridge and sheffield are good for that; however some unis, for example warwick and durham, although not titled as "general engineering", still let all of their engineering students (no matter the specialism of the course they applied to) do a common first (sometimes even second) year, which allow flexibility to specialise only at a later stage of the student's studies.

2025 applicant here, lmk if you have anymore questions:smile:

I'm doing Nat5 rn and in my mocks I got:

Physics= A
chemistry= A
Math= A
English= (low) A
Graphics= A
Computing= A
Geography= A

For highers I'm gonna take:

physics
chemistry
math
English
graphics (I was torn between graphics and computing but generally graphics is better for engineering so I took it even though I like computing more 😭)

My best subjects are physics and math.

I was thinking of doing Chemical engineering but im not the best in chemistry and I heard its a really competitive field so that put me off a bit.

If anyone is doing a chemical engineering course (or know a bit about it) and can tell me more about it that would be really helpful thanks :3

Chemical engineering is more maths and physics than actual chemistry, all you need to know about chem is reactions
