A level choices

Hi I have just done one year of a btec in engineering and a level maths and ended the as year with 3 d stars and an a star in maths. But I kinda wanted to try and see if I could get into dentistry so I have just switched and repeated year 12 with a level biology, chemistry and maths.

Now I have one week to switch my mind and go back to the engineering course and maths and pretty much guarantee myself a space in uni potentially an apprenticeship.

Should I forget about trying for dentistry because one in 10 get in and the a levels are extremely hard I'm finding them challenging at the start but I know they are hard overall

Is it more wise to just go back to do engineering finish of the year and then go uni or is it more wise to fresh start the a levels and do them the next 2 years and see if I get into dentistry

Please help
Whats your motivation for dentistry?
Why did you decide to switch from the engineering route?
Do you enjoy/find bio and chem interesting?
How (historically) have you done in bio and chem?

Historically I did good got 9 in gcse's. To be honest what made me switch was after doing work experience in a dentist they earn a lot of money and have a good job..in the sense of what they do on their daily activities. I am finding the a level chemistry hard at the moment but it's only the 3rd week which concerns me.

But in regards to switching I think money was a big influence and work life balance

Id advocate for doing what you enjoy! If you’re finding chem hard that might be because you took quite a long break from it? Are you finding bio and chem more interesting than you did engineering?

To be honest yes and no. Obviously bio and chem are interesting because they are about the human body but certain parts of engineering I hated and certain parts were quite good mainly the civil side.

To be honest I'm not the type of person who needs to do something I like. I just prefer to do something I know is better for me and will satisfy me financially, and mentally more

If youre deciding factor is what youre motivated to do for a career which suits you then go for it, take bio and chem 🙂

Like what if I don't get into dentistry and then I just wasted years of my life just to go back into engineering

This is what I meant about following your interests. From my viewpoint, if you choose subjects for a reason other than that you enjoy them then it’s a bit of risk. Like what if you do study subjects which you dont like for a career but then realise it doesn’t suit you or whatever. Then youll be thinking oh I’ve wasted 2 years of my life studying something that I got no enjoyment from all for nothing. Whereas if you enjoyed your subjects youd have options to pursue what you love further and it wouldn’t feel like a waste.

I understand that I'm just stuck because I don't know which of these I enjoy more. I have till Friday to make a choice and stick with it. I enjoyed my dentistry work experience more than engineering but my biggest fear is to try out for dentistry not get in and waste 2 years just to do engineering again.

In my school in the.last 5 years only 2 have got in dentistry.

Try YouTube like allery chemistry, ma chem guy since it’ll help you go over content and explain it. But I would advise you to speak to a careers advisor at your school. Since you already got an A* in maths, I don’t see why they wouldn’t accept you for dentistry, it shows you’re capable. It is hard to get into but it’s not impossible.

Thanks for that I'm going to speak with my school and see what they say
