Hello,
I thought I would share my experiences of studying English lit as it’s been quite a long journey!
I started as an English lit undergrad in the university of Wales, Aberystwyth. Ever since I could read I have always loved escaping into books and stories. To be given the opportunity of studying English lit as a degree, in effect pursuing a degree in my hobby was a dream come true! The undergrad course was brilliant I enjoyed every minute, as it consisted of all genres and periods of literature, from Middle English right up to present day. Yes there was a lot of work, mostly independent- loads of reading books and secondary materials as well as writing essays but it was interesting and enjoyable too.
Following my degree I took a full time job but still had the itch for further English study, so I enrolled on an online distance learning OU masters degree, specialising in 18th c lit. It was hard work juggling a stressful full time day job with the masters, but it was wonderful to come home at night and get out my books! I had to take redundancy from the job as the firm folded due to credit crisis, but this gave me the opportunity to carry on studying and this time I went to the University of Chester and took the MA degree in nineteenth century literature and culture. This degree was wonderful, not only was the course super interesting but the tutors were all so passionate and I made some brilliant friends.
And now today, a year and a bit later I’m still at Chester, and still studying English for a PhD. It’s tough but I still love it, books and stories still offer the escapism and pleasure that they always did.
If you’re in doubt as to whether an English degree is ‘worth it’ I’d emphatically say yes, it can lead you anywhere and give you so many skills, as well as enjoyment and pleasure,
Jess
