Veterinary Medicine and Gap Years

Hi everyone, I am hoping to study veterinary medicine in 2026. I have just started year 12 and have a quick inquiry. Do gap years affect university applications, for example do universities like Cambridge and Edinburgh take gap years into consideration?!
Sorry if this is a silly question, I am still trying to understand the application process.
Also, would it make a difference if this gap year was spent volunteering with animals, or gaining work experience.
If anything gap years are encouraged. What is your difference between volunteering with animals vs work experience? Volunteering can usually be considered work experience. IMO it would be best to do some work experience but also do spend some time travelling, working, doing hobbies etc, it’s a great excuse to enjoy yourself for a year before going on an intense course.
