The Student Room Group

what do I do if my parents won’t let me move to university ?

I really don’t want to live at home because my home environment is bad. For GCSE’s, and currently for a levels, I have to go to the library or spend extra time at school everyday because my house is so loud and cramped that I can’t even focus.
I have a very distant relationship with my family however my parents are still quite overprotective. I have a horrible relationship with my dad though and I’ve struggled a lot with my mental health because of it, as well as because of the general living environment.
They won’t let me go to a uni that I’ll have to move out for, and there’s no room for conversation - I’ve tried multiple times.
I don’t even know what to do anymore. Do I just stop going to college now and not apply to uni? I literally can’t see myself living at home and I know that there’s no way I’d be able to do Uni whilst staying at home.
I can’t just go anyway because I wouldn’t be able to afford it.
There’s no guarantee that I’d be able to get a job, and my student loans would only be like max 3k year per. I don’t even know what to do 😂😂😂😂🔫

Just go! All I can say. It is about your future and whole life career. Don’t risk it.

Go for it! Talk to a teacher at college about it at the very least. If they think your house conditions are hindering your education, I'm sure they can take legal action on it as well. Best of luck 🤞

Have you started your UCAS I think you can put in a separate postal address so ask your friend if you can use their address then they can give you any paper work somewhere outside of your house that way your parents don’t know where your applying.

Hey! I don’t know a lot of your situation but all I can say is don’t stop your future because of your parents. If you want to go uni, you should go as you are your own person. I would talk to a trusted teacher about your situation and see how they can help. Also, if you do decide to live at university there are loads and loads of support for you!! My advice would be to not let your parents control YOUR future!!

I hope this helps, if you need anymore help just let me know!!

Hi there.

My best advice would be to talk to someone at your college about this and see if they can help you at all with your application. There will be employability or even just welfare teams at your college and they would be able to help you out with this and just help you with your application or talk you through what the options are for you.

In terms of finance, have a look here: https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-calculator
This website tells you how much student loan you will get based on your household income. You could then have a look at accommodation at the Uni you were thinking of going to and this might help you to decide whether this would be feasible for you. If you really wanted to move out and you didn't mind where, you could have a look at Universities in cities which have cheaper accommodation or a cheaper cost of living in general. You will likely then need to get a part time job, but lots of people have jobs while they are at Uni so try not to let this put you off applying.

If this is something that you really want to do, and especially if you think it will really benefit you in the future, you should really think about doing it and look into the options that you have available. I know you have said that there is no room for conversation, but if you show that you have researched it all and have plan in place, they may be more willing to listen. If not, you can still go, don't let this put you off.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.
