Volunteering/ work experience

Hi guys, so I am currently going into uni to study chemistry with a PGCE because I want to become a teacher. However, I have no clue of what being a teacher is like and I want to work in a secondary school, but a lot of schools are not accepting me for work experience. I know I still have a few years to do a PGCE, but I can’t looked forward to it until I can gain experience. Why are secondary schools not accepting me and does anyone know any schools across Manchester that do work experience.

You ask, "Why are secondary schools not accepting me?" Have you asked those schools? They are in a much better position to answer your question than random folk on the internet are.

Hi @Aliysha93

If you are struggling to get school experience and still have a few years until you start your PGCE, I would recommend looking into other opportunities to work with the age group you want to work with in the future.
For example, you might be able to find tutoring opportunities or clubs (e.g., scouts / guiding) that you could volunteer at. This would give you some good experiences whilst you try to find some school work experience.

Hope that helps!

Have you tried asking your school or college if they’d offer you work experience or volunteering to teach students? Or maybe if they’d let you shadow a teacher for a day or a few hours at least.

I did ask, and they said that atm they don’t have the capacity for work experience as there are currently 2 PGCE students on placement A . They also told me that when the student move to placement B,I should definitely contact them again in jan because they might not be getting placement B students they won’t know until the end of the year, but Idk if I should contact them because I just feel like I am pestering them.

That’s a shame but at least they’ve not closed the door, by saying there is a chance if you try again in Jan. Maybe wait until then, or try contacting them again before Jan? You’re not pestering them, either way it’s not like you are still a student there so not sure why it would really matter
