Passed All Resits but Told to Retake the Year – Confused and Waiting on Appeal

Hey everyone, I’m hoping someone might have some advice or has been in a similar situation.

I failed five pieces of work in my third year and thought I could resit them over the summer and then get my results. The exam board, however, decided I needed to retake the whole year instead. I submitted an appeal to challenge that decision, and while I was waiting for the appeal, I continued with my resits.

The thing is, I’ve now passed all my resits, meaning I’ve passed every single assessment over the 3 years of my degree. But because the exam board originally said I needed to resit the year, my course didn’t put my marks through to the exam board, so I haven’t received any confirmation that I’ve graduated.

It doesn’t make sense to me that I’d need to resit the entire year when I’ve passed everything now. Has anyone else had this happen, or know what I can do next? I was supposed to get an update on my appeal on Monday, but the wait has been dragging on, and I’m feeling really stuck.

Any advice would be appreciated!

You need to really understand what your university and the exam board rules are on this topic. There should be a document for each module you sat an examination in which covers what happens when you fail an examination, and what options you have for resitting it. When I was at university the rule was that you would only be offered a resit if you completely failed the first sitting - however your result in the resit would be limited/capped to a Grade 4 pass irrespective of how highly you scored in the resit. As you have failed 5 exams you may find that this capping of the resits could significantly impact the grade of degree that you can be awarded if you insist on the resit results being honored. If you are being offered to retake the year you MAY find that this is a better option as this reattempt at the whole year may reset any capping of reattempts and enable you to get a better grade of degree overall. These are only the rules that were in place when I was studying so please do not assume that they apply to you, you really must understand what rules apply to you in this instance and ensure that you know which path is best for you.
