Student maintance loan - confused.

Hi, I've been told I need to apply for the maintance loan. I initially only applied for my tuition loan. I've gone back on to apply for the additon and only around £4200 has showed my maximum.

Another option showed was to apply with my income, which means I might be entitled to more.

I'm confused on why they is 2 different types and why the income based isn't just the required if it means being able to recieve a bigger loan? When looking at averages it seems around £9000 is the minimum which is a big difference to the £4200.

Many students that know that their household income is above the threshold (around £65,000 per year), just apply for the minimum and don't submit evidence for the higher amount as it would be a waste of time. If you want the higher amount, then you (and your parent/parents) have to submit houshold income evidence.

The minimum maintenance for this year (2024/25) is:

Living with your parents £3,790
Living away from your parents, outside London £4,767
Living away from your parents, in London £6,647

The maximum maintenance for this year (2024/25) based on household income of less than £25,000 is:

Living with your parents £8,610
Living away from your parents, outside London £10,227
