Bad experience at University College London

Recently my friend told me about her bad experience in UCL and I would like to bring attention to this. My friend is doing a design engineering degree and her professor is heavily biased and marked her work unfairly just because she is Asian. She requested for a remark but the email went unanswered. Her presentation in class was not respected as the professor kept scrolling his phone during the presentation and did not pay attention at all. When she asked a question in a tutorial, the professor did not answer and humiliated her in front of the class. This is totally unacceptable. I have also heard that students’ opinions are not respected at all by the school. When you are paying £40000 a year, the teaching quality and lack of basic respect towards student are just not worth it. I don’t know if this is a common occurrence or my friend is just unlucky. Please share your experience at UCL just so that more potential students are aware of the actual situation in the school. I have heard that their mental health support towards students is lacking and students’ satisfaction is very low. I understand UCL got a great reputation as an outstanding uni but most of us did not know what the actual student experience is like. Share your experience to prove me wrong/right.

Hi! Current UCL Law student here. I am so sorry to hear that your friend has had a horrible experience, has she reported this to the faculty? I know UCL prides itself on multiculturalism and diversity so this behavior is unacceptable and I know the university will deal with this if they are aware. As someone who has experience with the mental health support at the university, my experiences have been excellent and far better than my peers (i.e my friend goes to Bristol uni and we were talking about our experiences with the student support system, I had to email them on her behalf asking them to help!). Personally, I am Asian as well and I have never experienced any form of discrimination or racism at university, if anything the fact that the university is so diverse makes me feel like I am appreciated/respected. I suppose UCL is such a large university that everyone has differing experiences, and it does depend on the faculty, but please do get your friend to seek redress ASAP. Best of luck.
