This sounds like a silly question, but I want to know if I need to write 'Member of Parliament (MP)' the first time I mention it as part of my work experience section, or if I can just get away with writing 'MP' only. This sounds really pointless, but I'm applying to a high ranking university and would like to get it right, but ideally I'd like to keep to the shorter term or else I'll have to cut down on words again.

If you’re applying to study politics (or a politics related subject) just abbreviate to MP. If you’re applying to study something unrelated to politics, without context they may not know what you mean, but assume that they do. It’s a common abbreviation - save your characters where possible.
