Should I change my uni? (design)

I got really good grades last year and started going to a russell group uni but I felt super unfulfilled by the course. I had always wanted to study something creative at uni.

I took a leave from uni and did a short course in design so suddenly I had a really good portfolio. But i only decided last minute that I wanted to go for a full degree in graphic design so I had limited options applications as some of my top choices told me they were full even though my portfolio is good. I also was having a hard time mental health wise so I didn't really want to move out.

I've now started at a local uni in my city. I dont think I would have ever considered them before but I went to the open day and turns out it has really good facilities in the creative courses and it seemed like there were some cool graduate stories. Its ranking for graphic design is kind of mid level but I thought given my situation it made sense to go there.

Now I'm worried I've undersold myself since I know I'm a good candidate but I checked the new rankings and the course has gone down some places. I don't know if I should go through clearing or if its worth transferring somewhere else for second year, though Im worried id be disadvantaged if I joined a year in at another place.

I feel like Im stressing too much over ranking but I think I want to pursue an MA in something art/design related postgrad and I'm worried going to a certain uni will make it harder to get into a top arts uni later on, which I think is something I really want to do.

Hey @icelatte, hope you're well! I am a student at Norwich Uni of the Arts and also studying Graphic Design! Well done on deciding what was best for your future! It takes a lot of confidence to change subjects and university once you have already started. To answer your question regarding getting onto an MA. Your options are not limited to the uni that you are studying for your undergrad. It will be about your own achievement and final portfolio. We would be happy to provide you with more support and information.

Just out of curiosity, what uni are you wanting to study for your masters in GD?
I have linked our fantastic MA course here: MA Communication Design

Look forward to hearing from you,
Charlotte

The ranking of a university has literally no correlation to how good the graphic design course is there. It sounds like you're enjoying it there, and graduates have gone on to do good things, so if you work hard - you might well follow their footsteps.

The course you're on will have an impact on your future, but your success is almost entirely down to your skill and hard work. Postgrad design courses wouldn't care where you did your BA either. It's all down to your portfolio.
