MML online interviews Cambridge

Hi there,

I’m in Y13, applying for MML at Cambridge in October. I was wondering whether anyone who had an MML online interview could just give me a few ideas about what it would be like? I’m applying to Clare, so if anyone interviewed there, even better!

Thanks,
M

No different to in person; for a lot of places you'll be given something to read for 20-30 mins prior that you then go on to discuss during it. And expect to do some of that discussion or another part of the conversation in the language if you are already doing it at school! Extracts are typically literary, or a poem and such (as it's a literature heavy degree).

Hi,
How much time is spent discussing in the language? From the mock interviews on youtube it didn't seem very long compared to the impression I got from the website
Thanks!

Really varies but I'd say your average is maybe 5 minutes or so? But I had friends (10 years ago!) who had theirs mostly in the language rather than in English, though they were a minority. For some people it was more about why interest in that language, and discussing e.g. travel related to it; I know of others who discussed some of the text they were given in the target language.

The thing with interviews is you can't really prepare for it. My advice is just work on your pronunciation, grammar and vocab as you would for school anyway, and read in the language as much as you can - news is ok but any extracts you might be given to read are going to be literary so get used to working with actual texts in the language!
