Applying to med with an access course

Hi,

I want to do the access course at the college of west anglia and was wondering what unis would be best to apply to. I’ve previously done A Levels (4 years ago) didn’t get great grades. None of my A Levels were in sciences. I went to uni but left in year one due to health issues. Is there anyone with a similar experience who did an access course and progressed to med school? I would love some advice.

Thanks!

Hi, sorry only just noticed your post in a search. You should find this post I made a few weeks ago useful: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7535817#post99981930

That being said, don't trust a stranger on the internet, highly recommend you contact the schools directly and get definitive responses from them yourself.

Out of interest, have you heard back from CWA yet (if you've already applied for the Access)? I've been anxiously waiting for week for them to book me in for an interview

Is there a particular reason you are considering access? Since your A levels are within 5 years, you Millie be better of applying for a 6 year med with foundation degree

Hi!

Thanks so much for linking your post it’s super helpful!! I actually had my interview back in mid September for this year entry but I decided to defer until next year. So I currently have an offer for 2025! Have you heard back yet?

Edit: I did contact the schools myself and received a hefty amount of responses. It is looking quite promising in terms of choices.

Hiya,

It’s because I know my A Levels aren’t competitive enough!

Before considering Access, you must email the admissions team of the Universities you are considering to check that they accept the Access to HE diploma and also what units and grades they require. Not all of them will accept Access.

Bristol, in common with other universities will want evidence of recent study before considering anyone for medicine. Having a lot of work experience in your application will also weigh well in your favour. If you aren't applying until next year now, please make the absolute most of this time to gain experience.

Oh that's fab that you contacted schools and got positive responses from them

Great that you have your place confirmed at the CWA already! I have actually decided to do my Access from the Distance Learning Centre instead. The universities I want to apply to have confirmed they accept this (as it's QAA-approved and has the appropriate number of Chemistry and Biology credits), and while I would have loved CWA's course, I can start this online one immediately and have it (hopefully) done by next year already, AND very crucially keep my full-time job going for that much-needed income.

Hopefully this time next year you and I will have both received interview invites from some medical schools and will be busy preparing for them!

Hi,

Thanks for this! I currently work on a ward as a ward clerk. I have been discussing work experience opportunities with the consultants in the specialty I work in

Bingo. If you appear keen and polite then you will no doubt get plenty of help with sorting work experience. If you can find an F1 or F2 and ask if you can shadow them for the day or for the duration of their shift. This will give you a real glimpse of what recently graduated doctors get asked to do.
