If a stranger calls you sista are they assuming you're asian or muslim?

A few sales people have referred to me as sister or sista on the street on seperate occations (the ones who work for a charity and wants you to donate) as they were young boys looked my age around 18-20 and both african descent. When they called out to me they would be like 'sista sista sista' which is very strange.

Do they only say it to people who look asian (south asian and middle easterns) or if they assume you're muslim? I don't really see why they would say it to a white woman

I have never heard a roadman say sista in my life lol. The first guy said it in his normal voice, second guy said it in a nigerian accent. Very weird...

I've been referred to as sister or sistah a few times. I've also been referred to as chica because of being of Latino heritage. I think of it as a term of endearment. That there's nothing else behind the use of the terminology.
