Do student nurses get paid for placements?

Hi everyone,
I got accepted into UON and will be starting on the 23rd of September and I was wondering if student nurses get paid for placements or any type of compensation for those hours.
Thank you.

No you don't get paid for nursing placement as a student nurse

That is supposed to be covered by your learning grants and any student loans you take out.

Only student nurses who get paid are those who do the nursing apprenticeship scheme.

In terms of £3.5k student finance per year AND £5k NHS LSF per year, yes.
In terms of "you get X amount an hour on placement".... nope.

Hiya!

Unfortunately, university Nursing students currently do not get paid during their placements. These placements are a compulsory part of the course, and to pass each year and finally graduate, students must complete a certain number of hours, and pass each placement as required by the curriculum.

The main purpose of placements is educational. Since nursing students aren't fully qualified yet, they need constant supervision while working on the wards. The focus is on applying theoretical knowledge, developing essential clinical skills and gaining practical experience whilst also finding out firsthand what they like and dislike.

However, there are financial support options available. While students may find it hard to maintain a part-time job during their placements, and they are training to work as part of the NHS they can access financial aids such as scholarships, grants, maintenance loans or bursaries. For example, the NHS offers eligible Nursing students an NHS Learning Support Fund to help manage their expenses. Here is a link for further information regarding this

I hope this has helped and cleared up any confusion 🙂

Hi there,

Unfortunately not. We do get the NHS Learning Support Fund, and Student Finance, but we don't get paid for the hours we do on placement

Hi there 👋,

Well done for receiving a place to do nursing! which type of nursing are you planning on studying?

Unfortately nursing students do not receive an hourly rate or income from directly being on placement. However, universities in Wales offer a NHS Welsh Bursary for nursing students and students can still apply for a student finance grant or loan.

I would also suggest looking into whether your university you are planning on attending offers any form of scholarships or additional bursaries for different situations.

Hope this helps and good luck.
