The Student Room Group

to all the year 12s, how is it going so far 😭

i haven't been here in a while, but obviously most of us are probably entering our third week of being in sixth form so i was wondering how yall have been getting on? i do ocr a biology, aqa psychology, and aqa art- and I want to go on to do neuroscience + psychology at kcl; but the pressure from myself to do well is starting to get to me. I had such a bad mental break in year 10 and 11 and it made my life an absolute hell and under no circumstance will i allow myself to spiral the same way i did back then during a-levels. i honestly am a little bit nervous- but i was wondering whether anyone does similar subjects to me or had any opinions or views on how sixth form has been so far 🫶

hope you are all doing amazing ofc

Hey!!! I do Edexcel Business, Edexcel Economics and AQA Psychology. Sixth form has definitely been an experience!! I am an external (the only one from my school) so it’s been tough but I’m trying to socialise, put myself out there and really focus in lessons. Don’t stress ! Just have a routine for revision, take breaks (as much as you need but not lengthy ones) and remember it’s okay to have a day or 2 in the week off to focus on yourself 🩷

honestly I was also one of the few externals and EVERYONE seemed to know each other so it was a bit difficult to make friends at first- but now I feel like I've found the people I'm comfortable with, and since there's always time for me to be doing something productive then I'm becoming a lot more okay with just being independent and doing my own thing.

Honestly not gonna lie terrible like the school is great but studying wise I went from being above average or decently top to now being at the bottom and failing a subject .
Does anyone have any tips on how to revise or learn the content for a levels to push up grades. I do OCR Biology , AQA Chemistry and Edexcel Psychology

Year 12s,

Just jumping into offer you all some reassurance.

Sixth form is a big change in your environment from year 11, you just need to give yourself some time to get used to it. Its totally normal to feel a little bewildered and overwhelmed. In fact, it would be more surprising if it had been plain sailing since you started! I can assure you that once you settle into a routine and organise your study time, things will start to slot into place and get easier. Take it from someone who's been there!

Huge best of luck this year, and please, please post away if you need any support 🙂

Revise around your free periods. Say On Thursday I have double biology and I have a free period before it, I’d spend the hour on refreshing myself on what I did last lesson and then maybe going a bit ahead. When you get home dedicate 1-3hrs of revision. For some subjects you won’t need as much and some days you may do 2hrs instead of three. However you’ve just started y12 you should really try enjoy this as much as you can. In y12 I definitely didn’t revise as much as I am in y13 and it’s just because I didn’t have a structured schedule.

Already some really good advice above. I would say the routine will work itself out - just get used to when you have lessons and from there identify the free periods when you can plan a study, revision or catch-up session. Perhaps mark out your free periods on a colour coded online calendar alongside your lessons for each subject.

For organisation, personally I stayed at school after hours every day except Friday to do 1-1.5 hours of extra studying. Even when I felt like I was mostly caught up, I'd use the sessions to go over content, practice past paper questions and make revision cards out of model answers for topics I found more difficult (this was great for chemistry and helped me improve my grade to an A). It didn't feel like a lot each day but ended up being 4-6 hours extra per week. Just make sure that whatever studying you plan to do you intersperse it with regular breaks and time to do things you enjoy too 🙂

I hope this helps, best of luck this and next year and please ask away any more questions!
