The Student Room Group

feeling left out during freshers week

I got here a four days ago and even though I've met some nice people I haven't really clicked with anyone whereas for others it's like they've already formed their friendship groups. My flatmates are all boys and are going out together, not including me. I've been putting myself out there and going to loads of daytime freshers events but drinking isn't really my thing unless I'm with people who I trust. Can someone tell me it gets better after this week when courses start because loneliness is eating me away and I worry I'll be alone for the next 3 years.

Hi Anon,

Don't worry! Friendships sometimes form within flats however a lot of people don't click with their flatmates. I found most of my friends from my university course itself - this tends to be a great way to meet people as you all automatically have a shared interest (the course you're taking!).

You can also meet great people at sports clubs or societies where again you'll have a shared interest in the sport or the reason for the society. A lot of sports teams have free trials during freshers week so if you can pop along to those it might be a good way to see if you like the team.

Sometimes meeting people at university just takes a minute but I'm confident you'll find your people!

Hey👋

I'm sorry you haven't met people you connect with to date. It's the early days of your University experience. So, I'm sure you'll start to develop friendships soon.

It might be worth checking out your university's Students' Union website for a list of clubs and societies you could join. Clubs and societies welcome new members and are a great place to meet like-minded people.

You could explore whether your accommodation has organised events to bring people together.

You'll probably find when teaching starts, you'll begin to get to know other people studying your course through tutorials and workshops, and you'll meet people through the friends they have made.

If you continue to struggle with loneliness, remember to stay in touch with your friends and family at home and don't be afraid to reach out to your university's wellbeing team. They won't want you to feel alone.

I hope you settle into university life soon. Take care of yourself and stay positive.
