Finally! Thank you for this thread! I've been lurking the last one for a while, and have just been waiting for my year to come up.

Anyways...

Prospective course: MPhil in Political Thought and Intellectual History
Achieved (or expected) grade: 1st
Nationality: British
Current (or last) university: Queen Mary, University of London
Current (or last) course: BA in History
College preferences: Gonville and Caius, Pembroke, Darwin (currently weighing between Pembroke and Darwin as my second choice)
Other universities you’re applying to: Queen Mary, University of London / UCL (they do a joint MA in the same area I'm applying to)

I've also just spent a month at King's College, Cambridge as part of a vacation scholarship scheme between them and my current uni, and I really enjoyed my time there! I'm hoping to return as an incoming student next September.

All the best!!! On a side note - Is anyone here applying to the Commonwealth Masters Scholarship from India?

You spent a month at King’s and hoping to return as a student member but King’s is not one of your preferences.

Good luck with your application.

For funding, I suggest that you look through the funding pages and apply to all opportunities that you can find both in your home country and here (e.g. chevening, Gates, Harding, commonwealth etc.)

Yeah. I liked King's, very nice place with a good library, but I don't really see myself as a student there. I spent more time at the main university library while I was there.

Adding on to that, I got the chance to talk with a King's student that had been here since undergrad, who said that whilst the college was good, they do tend to be slow at administrative stuff, which kind of put me off. She also recommended I take a look at Darwin, Caius and Pembroke colleges, as she knew people that were at those colleges and really enjoyed it there. I had the opportunity to visit all three colleges whilst I was there, and I could definitely see myself as a student in all three.

Hey! Does anyone remember that image with the acceptance rates of colleges for postgrad, or like how many of their students applied vs were pooled there? I just got here for an MPhil and am applying for the PhD again, but last time got neither of my two preferences college-wise. My college is really nice regardless (as they all are!), but I'd like to make a better-weighed choice for next year!

I suspect it works very differently for 'continuing' students than entering students in terms of the statistics - ie the acceptance rates will be meaningless. While many people do change College between Masters and PhD (I did, and I know a colleague who had 3 different Colleges for UG, Masters and PhD), the fact that your first College will always (or at least strongly 'usually' offer you a place, means that other Colleges may not feel a pressure to accept unless you are likely to get a scholarship.

You might do best to ask around now you are there, and find out where people have made moves before.

Hey if it helps— two things: 1.) your spot is pretty much guaranteed at the university, and 2.) Cambridge website has the percentage of acceptance for choice of college

Consider Selwyn and Emmanuel College

Thanks! I've only ever been to Oxford so I have NO idea about any college in Cambridge; any particular reasons why these colleges?

They are both traditional colleges, close to the centre but not too close to get swamped by tourists, vibrant community and overall great vibe.

It's like you read my mind! Thank you. A quick question; what are the most traditional colleges at Cam? At Ox, from my experience, Oriel tops the list.

No Emma is just swamped by being about 10m from the bus station! Seriously, stop just putting random College names out there, it helps no-one.

@bnglherghb
Most traditional - depends what you consider tradition to be. Most Colleges have the gown-wearing, formal halls, strange Latin names for roles etc. Mostly 'tradition' does not serve students well, most traditions are things that serve the Fellowship, their terms and conditions, their food, allowances, privileges etc. Tradition mainly means rules about what students can and can't do - walk on the grass, stay during vacations, have kettles and fridges in rooms etc.

However, if you want a list, on balance probably Magedelene, Corpus, Christs, Peterhouse would be seen as the most traditional, arguably Johns, Trinity and Trinity Hall not far behind. But it depends what your measures are.
