Are uni halls always super loud or is it just during freshers?

Seriously, will the halls become quieter after freshers or is it always going to be this loud??

Hi @LoafOfBread05

Freshers' is definitely one of the busier times of year in student halls, so I would expect more noise during the next week or so. From my own experience, student halls are never the quietest place to live, mainly because so many students live there. Though I usually notice that after the first couple of weeks, the noise tends to quieten a bit. I think there will always be some element of noise throughout the day.

Once Freshers' has died down, if you're still hearing lots of noise outside of social hours (usually 11pm-7am, but this can depend on your accommodation) I wouldn't hesitate to let your accommodation know. Most people don't realize how loud they might be sometimes, and I've been in situations where some flats near me have been really noisy in the early hours. I just let the night security know and they went along to ask the flat to be quiet.

See how you get on, and don't be afraid to let your accommodation know about any issues, as they're there to help.

Hope this helps. 🙂

That makes more sense!

I know there will always be some degree of noise in halls, I've mentally prepared myself for that. But will it always be to the degree that it is during freshers? Seems a bit excessive at times especially with the thin walls.

It will get quieter once people have actual studying to do. In the first couple of weeks there’s not so much academic work being done.

Hey @LoafOfBread05

It will start to quieten down. Like @martin7 mentions, there isn't much work going on at the moment as classes are yet to recommence for most people, so there'll be more noise than usual.

Hopefully as the semester gets going, it'll become quieter.

Emily 🙂

It really depends on what university you’re studying at, and also each university has different levels of loudness between the different accommodation buildings.

Largely it’ll be louder during freshers though. And do speak to a student rep on campus if the noise is too much - they may have a space in another (quieter) building.

Enjoy it as much as you can!
