Pembroke or Peterhouse for engineering?

I've applied to Pembroke, but I just looked at the admissions statistics and Peterhouse seem to have a higher proportion of admitted applicants. I liked both colleges similarly, but probably Pembroke more so. But I wouldn't mind Peterhouse at all if it meant I had a better chance of getting in. Pembroke have had around a 13% acceptance rate (this includes direct offers + 'pool offers by other colleges') over the last couple of years, while it seems to be consistently over 20% for Peterhouse. Does this mean that it's objectively harder to get into Pembroke? Do Peterhouse generally get better applicants? I'm so confused and would appreciate any advice lol.

Don't apply based on application statistics. Apply where you like. There is the pooling system so your likelihood of getting into the university as a whole shouldn't be dependent on the college to which you apply..

How did you get on? I also applied to Pembroke for Eng and interviewed in December.

See the Tompkins Table 2024. Pembroke was 5th of Cambridge colleges for best exam results. In the last decade, Pembroke's best showing has been 2nd (4 times). Peterhouse was 15th last year. In the last decade, Peterhouse's best showing has been 4th (twice). Since the start of the show, Pembroke's best showing in University Challenge has been series runner up in 2012, Peterhouse were winners in 2016.

For Engineering, Peterhouse specifically mention their famous alumni on their website; Babbage, Kelvin, Whittle, Cockerell.

For admissions purposes, the Tompkins Table is fairly useless.

The college's showing in University Challenge is completely irrelevant to the point that I question why you even bring it up.

'Do Peterhouse generally get better applicants?' was a question by the OP. How can average exam results whilst at Cambridge be 'fairly useless' in determining that? Unless some colleges are better at improving students, in which case the Tompkins Table is useful to establish that, given that many Cambridge applicants, regardless of college, tend to have similar grades.

As an engineering student at peterhouse, I can tell you that only 20% of students here passed the step 2 requirement, they let the rest of us in anyway
