How many GCSE subjects needed for applying top tier universities in UK & US?

I’m a Year 10 student, and my school requires us to take at least 10 IGCSE and GCSE subjects: 6 compulsory core subjects plus 4 elective subjects. To be honest, I’m not sure if I can handle that many. I’m wondering if I could omit low grades in, say, 2 subjects when I apply to universities. Alternatively, could I drop some subjects for the GCSE exam to focus on the core subjects?
You cannot omit results. You have to declare all results pass or fail. Anything else is fraud and you could lose your place.

Whether you take less is between you and your school. Most UK students take at least 8 subjects often more.
