Zoology with only biology?

Hi!
I’m planning on doing conservation and ecology or zoology at uni, but I only take bio A level. Is this ok? I’ve read entry requirements and a lot of unis don’t require any sort of second science, even a few of the russel group ones.
Honestly, I just wanted some reassurance that I haven’t made a mistake in only doing bio
Thank you!

If you’ve read the requirements for a variety of uni courses and you only need biology then you should be fine 🙂 Im actually aiming for the exact same degrees as you!

Thanks! It’s great to see someone else is doing the same thing as me because it’s so niche that I don’t know anyone else who’s interested in zoology or anything

Yup! Out of interest what other subjects are you doing with Biology? Oh also if you want you can follow My gyg if you’d like to chat about like applications (in the future though cos im scared too…) and school stuff (I dont know but you seem nice lol and its nice to have people following with the same aspirations)

Just followed ur gyg! I’m so happy to finally have someone aiming for the same thing as me  so I also do English lit lang, history and German. I know it’s a really odd combo but I loved the variety of subjects at GCSE and wanted to mimic that. Also, my a level subjects were all my best grades at GCSEs, so it makes sense to do them.
I saw on ur gyg you also do physics and maths! I could never ngl lol since I don’t have a very mathsy brain but I have a friend who does physics and apparently it’s really interesting! How are you finding it?

Thanks for following! It is a bit of an odd combo (and 4 subject wow) but if you like them all then that’s great 🙂 Yeah maths is easy for me and i did fsmq in year 11 so I already know most the year 12 content. At the moment Physics is really chill because we’ve only just started the electricity topic but Im enjoying the increase in us being taught the theory behind stuff and being given freedom to mess about with circuits lol

That actually sounds so chill because I expected a level physics to be really rough but from what I’ve heard it’s not too bad! But isn’t the definition for current like a whole paragraph omg

Hi @larsss,

As a Russel group, the University of Southampton only require A-level biology and preferably on other science which includes: Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Psychology, Environmental Studies, Geography and Geology. So yes you should be okay!

If you have any further questions about zoology degree at UoS don't hesitate to ask asI completed a BSc Zoology and MRes Wildlife Conservation so may be able to help.

Hi @larsss and @DerDracologe,

Its great to hear that you both are interested in studying Biosciences!

Like Southampton, the University of Exeter is a Russell Group university and you can see on out website that the A-level requirements for both BSc Zoology and BSc Conservation Biology and Ecology are ABB with a B in a science subject. This includes Biology/Human Biology; Chemistry; Environmental Studies, and Environmental Science; Geography; Life and Health Sciences (Double Award only); Marine Science; Maths/Pure Maths/Further Maths/Statistics; Nutrition and Food Science; Physics; Psychology). If you have other qualifications, you can check out the requirements for BSc Zoology (https://www.exeter.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/ecology/zoology/#entry-requirements) and BSc Conservation Biology and Ecology (https://www.exeter.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/ecology/conservation/#entry-requirements) using the links.

It can be tricky to chose between courses such as Zoology and Conservation Biology and Ecology as in many ways they are very similar. If you're struggling, I recommend looking at the compulsory and optional modules for the two courses throughout the years of study and seeing which ones sound more interesting to you. However, if you're really worried about it and are finding it really hard to choose, remember your course is really about the modules you choose and not the title and there is typically a lot of flexibility around this!

I studied BSc Conservation Biology and Ecology at the University of Exeter so if you have any more questions about what its like to study there, how to chose between courses or anything else, please feel free to ask!

if you're aiming for a top uni you need a second science like maths. there is PLENTY of maths in zoology, if it's too late then you could still get some uni offers it shoudl be ok

Hey!
I’m applying for zoology/conservation bio this year and for me, taking just one science (at IB hl) has stopped me from being able to apply to universities with courses I had liked the sound of and which are well regarded in general, but I still have some amazing options which I would actually choose over any of the unis requiring two sciences!

My top choice is Exeter, which is a great uni and has an amazing course. As previously said, they don’t require two sciences. It’s also the absolute best place to do a zoology degree location wise which is such a plus for me.
I’m also looking at Sussex which doesn’t need two sciences either and is ranked 5th for zoology in the Uk by the guardian (just one thing I’m looking at).
Glasgow is another uni accepting bio alone and a pretty well regarded one at that.

As for my other two choices, I’m less keen on them because of how the courses sound and their locations, but it’s still zoology at the end of the day so I’d be glad to have them as options if I weren’t to be offered a place at the other three 😄

If you wanted to have the chance of getting into some top unis (if you base this on rankings) then you can always look at a somewhat similar course like environmental science which doesn’t tend to have two science requirements.

Don’t worry at all, you’ll find the unis for you!!

Hello!

I was looking at the IB subject requirements for zoology at Southampton but see ‘preferably’ hasn’t been used. Is it more or a preference of the University’s for students to have two hl science subjects, meaning I could apply with just Biology, or an necessity and that applicants with only one hl science won’t even be considered?

Thank you in advance 😄

Thank you for all this advice! I think in a years time I’ll be in the exact same boat as you so it’s great to hear that someone else is going through this! Good luck!! I’m sure you’ll get into Exeter!
