MPharm vs MSc for industry in pharmacy

For context, I want to pursue both industrial pharmacy and clinical pharmacy, but my main focus is on industrial pharmacy.
I was planning on applying to MPharm courses at unis such as UCL, KCL and QUB, but would I be better off applying for a BSc/ MSc in pharmacology instead and just pursuing clinical pharmacy later in life? Like which course gives me a higher chance of getting into drug formulation/discovery in industry?

Hi @croxas987, I’m in year 13 and I also want to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical industry. If you are interested in only the industrial side and becoming like a formulation scientist, I suggest you do pharmacology. However if you are interested in clinical as well and want both options I suggest you do pharmacy. Also bear in mind that some jobs in industry that are more competitive might want you to have a PhD. But it’s definitely possible to get into industry with just pharmacology and a work placement during university.

I’m honestly still struggling to decide between the two. With pharmacy you can go into hospital, community or industry, but I have been told that it is rare and competitive to go into industry with a pharmacy degree. But it is possible since areas like medical affairs, regulatory affairs, pharmacovigilance and formulation will respect a pharmacy degree. Just bear in mind that with pharmacy you will have to do spend time in community or hospital during your degree and you will have OSCEs. However if you want a straightforward route to industry and like being in the lab, doing a pharmacology degree is also useful. Biomedical science is also an option but if you are interested in drug formulation and development than pharmacology is best.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much, @sincere.emm.
I’ve always had the idea of pursuing an MPharm/MSc and then doing a postgraduate depending on what I did first, eg. MPharm then PhD in Research or MSc then something in clinical pharmacy. But I’ve been looking at postgraduate degrees in clinical pharmacy and they all require registration with the GPhC. So if I did pursue an MSc in pharmacology, then wanted to do clinical pharmacy would I have to do the undergraduate MPharm?

Yes definitely. If you really want to do clinical pharmacy I suggest you do the MPharm first. The pharmacy degree is very science based so you will still do modules on pharmacology and medicinal chemistry. But if know you want to do clinical pharmacy you must be a pharmacist.

I agree with sincere. If I was you, I'd do the MPharm, and then you could take a masters in pharmacology, which could be one that is more specifically to do with the drug development industry.
You then would also open up the possibility of working as a pharmacist between your MPharm and MSc if you wanted to, or even doing some shifts while you're studying for your MSc.
