Student finance and universal credit HELP!

Hi I just want to know how much universal credit deduct from you if your a full time student, I am a single mum of 2 and over 25, I’ve applied for SFE and they’ve said I’m entitled to the following;

Maintenence loan £6647
Maintenence loan (higher) £7910
Parent’s learning allowance £1963
Childcare costs up to £331.95 a week for two or more children

My maximum entitlement to universal credit is £1872.57, they’ve told me Maintenence loan is classed as income they will divide it over the academic year approx 10 months and the special support element is disregarded as well as parents learning allowance and any childcare grants, they've also stated £110 will be disregarded for any books travel etc, I’m confused as to how much the special support element will be disregarded from the amount above and how much I’ll roughly get, please help!!!!

Hey, I’m in the same position. Do you have an update on what happened with your UC?

I'm a mature student with a family. They worked out my student loan across 10 months. I wasn't entitled to as much it was just under £5000 and they used to take off around £340 each month for other deductions. But again my situation was slightly different as I live with my partner and have 3 children. If you feel like you will be in hardship I will strongly suggest applying to your universitys hardship funds. You will be more than eligible. If that helps you whilst your studying, all the better 👍🏾.

Hi, UC cut everything as they calculate all maintenance loan and the parents allowance as income disregard only 110 the rest is divided for 9 months so zero UC entitlement. And they don’t pay anymore for childcare as full time students it’s better to apply childcare grants.

If you have a low income and are eligible for Universal Credit (UC) with the housing element, your student loan should be assessed to include the Special Support Element (SSE) as part of your maintenance loan. If SSE has not been added to your loan and your UC entitlement has been significantly reduced as a result, you should contact Student Finance and request a reassessment of your award to include SSE.

SSE is intended to cover essential study-related costs, such as books and travel, and is disregarded by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) when calculating means-tested benefits. If your UC calculation only disregards £1,100 from your student loan while deducting the rest in full, this is incorrect.

For students with a household income below approximately £35,000 (provided they receive the housing element of UC), the correct disregard should include both the £1,100 standard disregard and the full amount of SSE, along with any applicable grants. If your student loan has not been assessed in this way, you may be at a financial disadvantage and should request a reassessment to ensure your UC award is calculated correct
Universal Credit Regulations 2013. Key provisions include:

Regulation 68: This regulation outlines how student income is assessed for UC purposes. It specifies that individuals are treated as having a student loan if they could acquire one by taking reasonable steps to do so.

Regulation 71: This regulation details the calculation of student income for each assessment period, including the treatment of loans and grant.

Special Support Loan or Grant If you receive a Special Support Loan or Grant, this shouldn't be taken in to account for UC award calculations as income as it's not intended to be used for living cost .

A Special Support Loan or Grant provides help towards learning, travel, books etc.

You should have on letter that you have special support element of loan which would be disregarded for UC income calculation.
Otherwise they would deduct you total loan amount - 1100 per year divided by 9 or 10.months depending how many weeks you studying.

Your maintenance loan (excluding the special support element) is counted as income for Universal Credit (UC). It's divided over 10 months, with £110 disregarded per month for books/travel.
Estimate:

£7,910 ÷ 10 = £791/month

£791 - £110 = £681 counted as income

£1,872.57 UC - £681 = ~£1,191.57/month UC

Parents' Learning Allowance & Childcare Grants are not counted.
