Personal statement / subject advice

Is applying for social sciences and business courses too much of a big gap or would it be okay and possible to tailor the ps to both? Business could be considered a social science, so would saying I want to study a social science related subject be okay or would it seem too vague? I have a plan to talk about the social side of business and the modules in my interested courses do intersect.

I would say its too much of a gap as they are both diverse subjects and their should be a intersection.

Do you know exactly what you want to do, career wise?

Not really that’s why I thinking of quite broad subjects. I was thinking of applying to two social science courses and this one business course that’s is quite heavy on the social science side so far. I was thinking of writing about cultures in general and how they affect businesses maybe.

Hi @londonstudentt,

I understand your concern of trying to tailor one personal statement to multiple subjects, however it is possible. It seems you already have a solid plan on how to relate them to each other. Personally, I study business management and it strongly relates to social topics as you are learning to manage others in a work environment.

I recommend checking out this UCAS article on how to write a personal statement that works for multiple subjects.

Many people I know applied to a variety of subjects across their 5 options, so don't feel alone in this as many students will be wanting to do the same. It's difficult to choose exactly what you wish to do, so it's always an excellent idea to give yourself choices if your unsure.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,

If the deadline for the perosnal statement isnt too soon i would say spend a bit of time trying to narrow it down. Talk to students that are doing the course. Or thing about the lifestyle you want in the future and go backwards from there.

example questions

Do I want to commute everyday/ or work from home?
Do I want to work around other people?

Do I prefer a structured routine or a more flexible schedule?

How important is location in my future job (city, rural, international)?

Am I open to continuous learning and professional development throughout my career?

What kind of impact do I want to make through my work?
