Explain the significance of masculinity in the play ‘Macbeth’

Macbeth's rise to power is driven by his desire to prove himself as a strong, decisive man. Early in the play, Lady Macbeth manipulates him by questioning his manhood, saying, "When you durst do it, then you were a man" . She equates masculinity with the courage to seize power through murder, implying that Macbeth must kill Duncan to prove his worth. This pressures Macbeth to act in ways that align with her view of masculinity as ruthless and ambitious.

throughout the play, masculinity could arguably be associated with violence as Macbeth is admired for his masculinity after slaying the 'merciless mcdonald', and is manipulated by lady macbeth to commit regicide in order to prove his masculinity. Furthermore, Macduff could also be percieved as masculine for killing the 'tyrant Macbeth' and therefore, masculinity can lead to or is associated with acts of violence and is thus destructive.
