SFE wont fund my first resit year with no explanation as to why?

I started my course almost 2 weeks ago, and up until yesterday SFE agreed to pay my tuition loan knowing I was resitting first year.

I got a letter in the post yesterday (23rd of September 2024) showing that my payable amount for the tuition fee loan was £0.00 which was confusing as I'd received no correspondence saying that as I was resitting the year, they would not be funding my tuition fees only my maintenance loan.

When I explained that I was reading in front of me (the reason for my call originally) that the entire years worth of tuition fee payments had all been processed and paid to the university, I was simply told that was an error and I should disregard it.

After then explaining that I am now almost 2 weeks into the course and have already paid my first rent for my accommodation (again because they never told me they weren't funding the tuition loan) that this was going to leave me in an impossible situation as I don't have £9,250 in my back pocket hence obviously applying for student finance.
I was told my only option would be to appeal the decision which would take 20 days for even an acknowledgement and even after explaining my situation again I was met with nothing but a sigh and "I cant really do much else."

I know multiple people who have resat a year and been funded for this via SFE and so I'm not exactly sure why I am an exception.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so, was it fixed? or am I just going to have to drop out of uni, move out of my flat and subsequently be required to still pay the rent and council tax for this year?

Thanks everyone.

Hi there. Are you repeating the full year? How many years of previous study do you have? Is this your first time repeating a year of the course? Thanks. David

Hi,
I am repeating the full year.
I did a foundation course at another university and year 1 at this university but failed year 1 so I have to resit.
Yes this is my first time repeating a year of the course.

Thanks.

Hi Spaghetti_Hips,

If you did a foundation course and are now repeating Year 1 on your current course it may be that you are not eligible for a tuition fee loan due to your previous study but I wouldn't be able to confirm this with 100% accuracy without account access. You can apply for an additional year of tuition fee funding if you have Compelling Personal reasons for why you couldn't progress from a previous year of study.

Thanks,
Calum

Hi there,

Why is that though when this is my first resit?

Thanks.

Hi Spaghetti_Hips,

If you have additional years of previous study on another course this will be included in the previous study calculation.

Thanks,
Calum

Hi,

I see what you mean.

I did and passed a foundation year course at a different university as I was 8 UCAS points away from getting on to my course, which then changed when I moved to another university starting on year 1 of the course which I failed and now have to resit.

Does this mean that because I did the foundation course that I'm not able to do a resit year at all?

Thanks.

Hi Spaghetti_Hips,

If you did a foundation year as a separate course this would affect the previous study calculation so may mean that you are not eligible for funding for a repeat year.

Thanks,
Calum

Hi,

I appreciate that but I don't understand as if I didn't do the foundation year I wouldn't have been able to attend at all.

Hi Spaghetti_Hips,

We would still need to take the foundation year into account as part of your previous study.

Thanks,

Unfortunately this is one of the reasons we recommend not to take a FY where possible, (retaking level 3 qualifications is usually the better option), as it uses up a year of finance eligibility.
