Impossible to get hold of anyone at DSA

I wondered if anyone has experienced the same or has any advice.

I applied for DSA as a continuing student in May.
Got a letter telling me iI need to apply using the full form, I tried ringing but couldnt get through. Waited 2 hrs on the phone then it disconnected, so I emailed.
After two weeks, I'd had zero response, so I filled out the form and posted it. Also emailed the full form and the continuing student DSA form as well.

I have emailed multiple times since May and tried to call, but I've been unable to speak to anyone.

My course starts next week, and my DSA is still not sorted!!
I need my funding and support in place so I can study!

I am currently on hold yet again to try to talk to someone.
Any advice on what I can do would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there. We cannot answer DSA queries from here but I am sorry to hear you have not been able to speak to an adviser. They are very busy at the moment. If you have emailed we can only ask that you allow time for a response. Thanks, David
@Talkative Toad, @artful_lounger - tagging you both as I saw you in another DSA thread.

Any advice for contacting DSA, or is it just a case of waiting and seeing?

Hi there,

You can contact DSA by calling us on 0300 100 0607 and selecting the "DSA" option. They are open Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 8:00pm, and from 9:00am and 4:00pm on Saturday. You can also email them at [email protected] and it is currently around 20 working days for a response.

Thanks,
Calum

Honestly in my case I just applied (properly) in September then had the university haggle/query DSA if they were taking too long to respond.

But beyond that, yeah I just waited even if that meant not having DSA support in place straightaway (because of when I applied).

That’s just me personally however.

Hi there. We can only advise to email the DSA team if students are unable to reach them over the phone and then to allow time for an email response. These are the only ways to contact the DSA team. Thanks , David

Not really well placed to advise unfortunately as for various reasons I almost never get my DSA stuff submitted "on time" (although equally most of the adjustments I need my uni just does by default so it's more of a pro forma exercise for me) and so I just submit it when I can and wait for whenever the response comes through :s-smilie:

Bear in mind DSA funding is separate to maintenance loan/tuition fee loan funding and not having your DSA in place shouldn't delay the other two or vice versa. However it may well delay you being able to get a needs assessment.

That said depending on what adjustments/support is needed, your uni (like mine) might be able to put some in place without the DSA stuff sorted out yet (for example, "standard" things like extra time in exams, extended deadlines and such can usually be arranged at least in the interim by the uni).

Also once you are at uni, often you can get support from your uni's accessibility team and/or your student union who can help advise you on when you may get an outcome from SFE and may (?) be able to advocate for you in some circumstances!

Many thanks for your reply.
How long is it acceptable to wait for a response to my emails?

The emails I sent on the 29th May, 23rd June and 23rd September to the DSA team ( [email protected]) have remained unanswered. I assume that waiting 129 days for a response may be a tad over the expected waiting times.

Hi, thank you for replying and sorry its taken me so long to respond. Many hours sat on hold to student finance has taken up a lot of my spare time!

Luckily, I have already had a needs assessment. I am going into my second year, so it is literally just a case of them saying yes or no as to whether they will be continuing to fund my support this year.

I am a distance learning student, and so, unfortunately, the Uni isn't really able to offer support outside the usual deadline extensions. My DSA last year funded a specialist tutor for mental health support. That's the only reason why I was able to pass last year after a few failed attempts at studying!

My course officially starts tomorrow, so I am a bit concerned that despite my many efforts to try and resolve this, I may not be able to complete the year to the best of my abilities, if at all, without support from the specialist tutor!

My Uni are aware of what is happening, and they have tried to liaise with the DSA team, but even they are being messed around, it seems!
