Child Care Grant really low?

Over the summer I got married and it has badly affected my child maintenance grant.

Previous years I go the full amount for childcare, however with my husbands income it has gone down to 2000 which is not enough. I am in my third year and will need to leave my course if I cannot sort this. My sons childcare costs 180 a week and we cannot afford this ourselves.

My husband is on enhanced PIP for living and mobility, and earns approximately 19000 a year. I am his full time carer and he cannot care for our son and I am the primary carer.

Is there anything at all I can do?

Hi Skrill3xy,

We will need to take your husband's income into account to income assess your entitlement. Has his income dropped since the 22/23 tax year?

Thanks,
Calum

I was classed as an independent student as we were not married at the time. I am just wondering what the financial threshold is for the childcare grant? I get the full maintenance loan so unsure as to why it would affect the grant?

Hi Skrill3xy,

How many children have you applied for?

Just the one. He is two. Our childcare is going up in three weeks due to current childminder suspecting special needs. Due to being a disabled student myself we are limited where he can go, and the cheapest childcare near me for specialised care is 240 a week for four days.

I am really unsure how to deal with this as I do not want to leave my course in my final year

Hi Skrill3xy,

If you have one child on the Childcare Grant claim then the upper income threshold is £19,795.23.

is this including my maintainence loan?

Hi Skrill3xy,

No, for the maintenance loan if you have a household income below £25,000 you will be eligible for the maximum loan.

I mean is my maintainence loan included in the 19,795 limit? So my husband's income plus my loan included?

Hi Skrill3xy,

No, your maintenance loan is not included as part of the household income.
