Should I use abbreviations in my personal statement?

I'm applying for Oxford, and am in the final stages of cutting down my word count for my personal statement. I was wondering if I could abbreviate Model United Nations and World Scholars Cup to MUN & WSC to lower the word count? Would this effect my application being formal for the university? Is it better to cut the statement in other areas or can I abbreviate these competitions?

As long as there is context I cannot see why this would be a problem. Go ahead and abbreviate

If there's someone in your school who helps with UCAS double check with them but my UCAS tutor said that he's had to change Duke of Edinburgh to DofE before so I'm assuming so.
